Hello my name is Stephanie,

I tutor, specializing in English and self-motivation, because I love to acknowledge the genius in young people.

I began tutoring in the subject of ESL in 1994. This was soon after I became a first time mom. At that time I had no interest in going back into the corporate world, so I choose to take on a career where I could be close to my newly born son. This career turned out to be wonderfully satisfying and I continued to pursue it for an additional four years before returning to Corporate America. During the time that I tutored from my home, I was elated to find that I could bring the English language skills and concepts (which came so easily to me) to others who were foreign in an English speaking country. I was successful with a small semi-private group of four people.

After the tragedy of September 11th, it was necessary for me to uproot my son from one of the top-performing schools in lower Manhattan and transfer him to a school (which happened to be mediocre) in our home town of “Brooklyn.” In May of 2002, due to cut-backs, I was laid off. I immediately began a professional career as a critic and journalist. Being a critic that specializes in arts and entertainment allows me to manipulate and create entertaining stories. So, this was an easy segue into the print world. This lay-off would eventually afford me the opportunity to educate my son from home. In 2006 when he was preparing to attend middle school, I was unsatisfied with the available school choices, so I decided to home school him. He had already been uprooted from the initial elementary school he was attending in lower Manhattan after the tragedy of September 11th and I knew I could not allow him to be uprooted and disillusioned with aspects of attending school. A mother’s intuition kicked in and I knew exactly which subjects to teach him and how to do this. I began using unorthodox methods and they worked. I have a young child who is brilliant or better stated – a child genius!

A few years ago, 2011 to be exact, an acquaintance expressed to me how impressed she was with the intellect my son exuded and she inquired whether I’d be willing to assist her with tutoring two of her daughters. This time around, I began tutoring students from Pre-K to 8th grade. I had a total of 5 private students who I would tutor at their homes. Our sessions would last between 45 minutes to an hour depending on the work that needed to be completed. For students who needed my assistance with their homework, I realized that I could create fun word puzzles and games to help them learn and retain their work. The concept was to create a fun manner to learn and again this method was successful. One of my students (a 6 year old girl), I believe is ready to take on the Mensa Program whenever her parents make the decision to pursue it.

I took on the task and it was rewarding! The girls continue to excel. From that connection, I received a request to tutor two other girls who lived in the same building. One of those girls came to me “promotion-in-doubt” from 5th grade. Within the span of three months, that particular young girl scored a 3.8 on the ELA exam and was valedictorian at her graduation. Needless to say I was an extremely proud tutor!

I believe that all humans have the capability of being a genius if they want to, their only requirement – “patience of the teacher/tutor.” One of the main methods I use is belief in oneself. That begins the path in the direction that most want to traverse. Although I am a staunch believer that some things are not meant for young minds, intellect is something that should be readily available to any mind that is open for learning.

I look forward to working with you in the very near future. I believe that this experience will be an asset for both you and me.

For the past three years, I have been tutoring elementary aged children. I was successful in helping a student to avoid being held back from graduating from fifth grade or having to attend summer school by tutoring her. I actually began tutoring her in February 2011 and by May 2011, she was prepared to take the ELA exam. Her overall score was a 3.8, she is still very proud of what she was able to accomplish and so am I. I love children and am very determined to see all children that I tutor excel educationally. My only request is that they show up ready to learn.
