California State University Northdrige (Master's)
I am recent graduate with an M.S.in geology from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) (May 2016), and a UCLA graduate (B.S., Geology, Class of 2012). I have experience tutoring at the high school and college levels. I am particularly qualified to tutor geology and related sciences. I am also a very strong writer and, as a language enthusiast (native English speaker learning German), I am also a skilled editor, especially regarding grammar.
I tutor because I want to primarily accomplish two things - 1) to become a better communicator of important ideas; 2) to enrich the lives of others with subjects that I know and love. Ultimately I believe tutoring should be something a student looks forward and something from which they may gain invaluable information that is applicable toward their goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have always been an enthusiastic student of history. To that end I have taken high school and college level courses in American History, Government, and Politics. I also received a 5 on the AP US History test in 2007.
Formally, I was a copy writer in high school for our school newspaper. Since then, I have frequently edited the papers of my peers for mistakes in spelling, grammar, and syntax. I feel my background in studying Latin makes me a well qualified editor.
In addition to taking advanced English classes in high school, including AP Literature (scored a 4 in 2007) and AP Language (scored a 4 in 2006), I have honed my writing skills through several humanities and science classes with intensive writing components. I am also first author on a paper submitted for publication (in review).
