New York University, Tisch School of the Arts (Photography, Italian)
I offer tutoring in seven subject areas: photography (technical strategies, editing, creative input and feedback, and history), Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, English, Grammar, Public Speaking and Writing. I have worked as a tutor for over three years and previously have taught photography portfolio workshops at various photo festivals around the world.
As a portrait and seasoned editorial photographer, I feel that I am an insightful communicator, possessing a special talent that makes a diverse group of individuals feel comfortable, not only in front of the lens, but also behind the lens. I have years of experience in the classroom and in the field with both groups and one on one. I have worked with students of all ages, and I enjoy inspiring my students with their own projects. Although, I specialize in portrait documentary photography, I have experience with and am always inspired with landscape, still life and studio photography.
Over the years, I have mentored many NYC students from schools such as New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, School of Visual Arts, Parsons and Pratt Institute. I have lectured about my published photography books and my working process at most of the NYC universities and colleges, including the International Center of Photography, as well as Yale University in Connecticut. I have exhibited and lectured about my work for over 10 years both here and internationally in museums, galleries and photo festivals. I am also the recipient of several grants and awards for my long term projects. Presently, my work is in two museum collections at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and in the largest contemporary photo collection at Le Musee de la Photographie in Charleroi, Belgium.
I am a graduate New York University with a BFA from the Tisch School of the Arts in Photography. Over the years, I have been published in The New York Times, The Courrier-International, The British Journal of Photography, Max Magazine and other magazines.
My nonfiction writing is a part of my creative process, and I am a highly skilled writing coach and editor. My writing has been published both online and in my photography books. I have worked for the last three years with a variety of students with different needs including: college students seeking help in grammar, vocabulary and academic writing skills, a screenplay writer, students needing assistance with college application essays and several artists working on personal statements. I am very versatile and I am just as passionate about teaching writing skills, as I am about teaching photography.
I am also highly skilled in both Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop and am happy to teach beginners as well as intermediate students. I have been working with Photoshop for almost ten years and in Lightroom for about three years. I love to make both of these programs accessible and fun to learn for my students. I also work as a photo retoucher for private clients working in both analog and digital formats.
Feel free to look at my gallery of personal work, student reviews, and my blog.
Please, note that WyzAnt will only allow me to upload images to my profile gallery that are cropped to their specifications. Therefore, you are not seeing the whole photograph, but a cropped version. If you get in touch with me, I will be more than happy to send you the full framed versions of both my analog and digital photography.

Juliana is a great tutor who really follows through beyond the call of duty. She walked into a mess of mistakes I had made in Lightroom and came up with several really smart solutions with great patience and fortitude. What could have been extremely stressful for both of us was ultimately a really good experience both during the process and the endgame. I would trust her implicitly to do the right thing and highly recommend her. She's a pro in every sense of the word.
Hi Susan, I am happy to be working with you. Thank you for your kind review of my work with you. I hope to continue to get your hard drive and your LR catalog back in order and get you on to some fun skills in both editing and refining your development skills. You are doing a great job and I am always happy to work with clients who have great photography work. Thanks again!
Juliana is a very positive and accomplished photographer. You can start at the beginning or jump right into your preferred area toward in-depth learning.
Thanks Cal for such a kind review. I really enjoy working with students not only in LR and PS, but also when it comes to working on a student's personal style and teaching good editing practices. I look forward to working with you again. Thanks so much!
Juliana is fluent in both Lightroom and Photoshop and was was able to get me started in Lightroom which was my goal for finding a tutor. I needed someone to set me up with LR. She is also a photographer and her insights about photography were very helpful. She is an excellent, patient and well experienced tutor.
Juliana's approach is very logical and organized from creating a class outline and goal list. She knows her way around Lightroom and Photoshop and is really dedicated to sharing her knowledge. She helped me understand the structure of Lightroom and offered me good tools to speed my importing and developing.
Thanks so much Neil for a lovely review. It was an absolute pleasure working with you and I am really amazed with your skill set in LR. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing you next time! Also, I can't wait to see your images once you get a chance to batch process! Have fun with it.
Juliana is amazing teacher, great photographer and very interesting person. Not every teacher has passion for teaching but she definitely does. She has great experience in both photography and teaching and that made our lesson very interesting and time just flew. I learned a lot in just one 2 hour lesson and I am looking forward for our next class. She came to the class well prepared, much better than me. She followed up on my homework and some materials that she promised to send me right next day. I am very excited and can’t wait for next Saturday class!
Thank you so much Larissa for just a generous recommendation. I really enjoyed working with you and can't wait to teach you more technical skills and give you creative support as you learn more about photography. Many thanks!
I am thankful that I found Juliana to tutor me in both Photoshop and Lightroom through Wyzant. I initially hired her to help me improve my intermediate skills in Photoshop. After meeting with her for the first time, she convinced me how essential Adobe Lightroom was to anyone working in digital photography today. Juliana was able to explain all of the wonderful features that make Lightroom a worthwhile tool and I was happily surprised when my son bought me the program over the holidays. It is clear to me that Juliana has years of experience working in both Photoshop and Lightroom. She makes a point to teach you the most professional skills and also the fastest way to not only retouch your images, but to organize and edit them into organized catalogs. Her standards are high, but she has the ability to teach a beginner like myself how to use both programs without overcomplicating the process. She really has the ability to break it down into simple steps. She has always come prepared for our lessons and also makes a point to leave me with homework. Lastly, it is really obvious that Juliana cares about her students and likes what she is doing. She definitely goes out of her way to show that she cares. I highly recommend her as a tutor in either program.
Hi Dov! I'm so happy that your son gave you Lightroom as a gift. You are going to love this program if you don't already. Thanks so much for giving me such a thoughtful recommendation and I look forward to seeing you learn more skills and to see you organize your amazing collection of photographs. You are going to be very organized and I hope I can make the process fun and interesting for you! Warm wishes, Juliana.
Juliana is very professional and really cares about her students. Not only was she early to our meeting but she was well prepared. Her effort shows in her work, she had lots of materials from a little bit of information that I supplied her with. All around it was a great experience and I look forward to more lessons from this tutor.
Thanks Jeremy for taking the time to give me a very generous and kind recommendation. You are right!! I do care about my students and I try to prepare myself and tailor each lesson to suit the needs of each student. It was really exciting working with you and I enjoyed the process. I look forward to continuing with you when you return in February!! Take care!!
I feel that we are getting there. I really like Miss Juliana and look forward to continuing where we left off with with much progress!
Thank you so much John M. for a lovely review. It was a complete pleasure to work with you and I am excited to continue the process! I know that we can work together and give you the tools and skills which will improve your writing technique. I believe in you 100%. Keep up the good work and remember to write daily in your journal for 15 minutes. The more you write, the more comfortable you will become with the process. We will have no problem completing your admission essays for the colleges where you are applying. Many thanks!
Juliana has been teaching me both Lightroom and Photoshop and she has been great! She is very organized, comes with a lesson plan and is very dedicated to teaching others. Being a professional photographer, she is very experienced with both programs. She enjoys teaching and really seems to care if you are learning and grasping the concepts. She also follows up with emails including information and assigning homework, so that you can study what the lesson covered. She is very professional and knowledgeable about computers and I highly recommend her.
IN ADDITION RECOMMENDATION FOR JULIANA'S WRITING SKILLS:
I started working out with Juliana to help tutor me in Photoshop. I really liked working with Juliana because she was incredibly down to earth, friendly, well-prepared and did more preparation for our sessions than I believe most or any tutor would normally do. She does her homework. She made a point to go out of the way to tailor each session to my specific needs and my goals while teaching me writing skills. In fact, she created a goal list with me and it was indeed, very helpful.
Most recently, I asked Juliana to help me prepare my six year old daughter's application to enter into a prestigious private school in NYC. Through my time spent with Juliana, I learned that she also tutors academic writing and is the author of two photographic books which include her own personal non fiction writing and short stories. She gave me a link to an article that recently featured her writing and her photographs on a well-known art site and I was amazed that she was not only a talented photographer and photo software technician, but that she had the ability to write clearly and succinctly and with great efficiency. She began by teaching me simple prewriting skills and got me started on writing several short pieces for my daughter's application. She really was sensitive to my anxiety about creating a well-written application for my daughter and we went through several rough drafts until, we were both satisfied with what I believe was a successfully written school application. And I actually felt like I had learned something in the process.
I highly recommend Juliana as a writer for high school level writers, college students, and anyone else who needs help in improving their writing. She will definitely give you good ideas, get you past your fear or writer's block, and help edit your writing until it really shines. She makes a point to help students improve and personalize their own writing style without imposing her own style upon as a teacher. She gives thoughtful guidance and will help you feel like a more confident and successful writer. I plan to use her in the future for other writer project as I am applying for a master's program this coming year. I highly recommend her.
Thanks Bonnie for taking the time to give me a recommendation for Lightrooom, Photoshop and Writing Skills. I really enjoy working with you and look forward to seeing you make progress!!
Juliana and I worked together to prepare for a month long stay I had coming up in Italy. I was a complete beginner and Juliana was very patient with me. She prepared a lesson plan in advance to cater to exactly what I needed for my specific trip. She was easy to work with and joy to be around. Enthusiastic, patient and easy to reach, I would highly recommend Juliana to anyone who is looking to learn a new language from scratch or brush up on a one they already know. A+++
Thank you Erin! You have been an amazing student and have learned far more than I actually thought you would be able to do in a short time. I really have enjoyed working with you and will be sad when our time together is finished. You have taught me the importance of working on pronunciation and the simple importance of making a student grasp the phonetics of the Italian language. I wish you a very good trip to Italy!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been working in Lightroom for over 5 years and I have been teaching it for over 2 years. I cannot stress enough the importance of learning this program for digital photographers. This is really your first stop before progressing on to Photoshop if you are mainly a digital photographer. This program will ultimately, help you organize your photographs, catalog them and make the edit and retouching process so much easier. It's an amazing and very fun program. My job is to show you how amazing it can be.
I come from a background of 15 years of color printing which means that I have an impeccable sense of how to make your images really shine in LR and I know how to teach my students how to be good at learning skills in both color correction and contrast controls. I also am familiar with all the other incredible developing features and other modules within the program.
I love teaching both LR and Photoshop because I have 25+ years working as a photographer and I can see how important it is to every photographer's work flow.
Please, check out my LR students recommendations.for both LR or Photoshop.
If you are in a panic because you cannot find your pictures or files, no, worries, I can help you create a clean archiving system and restore your catalog and fix your LR problems. Keep in mind that 100% of my LR, students come to me with a corrupt catalog and this is quite common. I have done many overhauls at this point as a tutor and teacher and can help you fix and stabilize your archiving system both on your hard drive and your catalog.
I do charge an extra fee for corrupt catalogs, retrieving lost files and folders and reorganizing a sound and functioning hard drive. I will charge you $85. dollars for the first 5 sessions that are used to fix your corrupt catalog and hard drive. Normally, it does not take more than 3 sessions to fix these problems. After the 5th session, I will reduce my rate back to the normal rate of $55. dollars. Also, if I am able to finish the clean up job prior to the 5th session, I will also revert my hourly rate to $55. dollars. I cannot reiterate enough how important it is to have a catalog and a hard drive with sound integrity and I can get you there. This is your first stop when working in LR.
My minimum session for LR and for all my subjects is 2 hours.
I have been working in Photoshop for 9 years after I changed over from being an analog to a digital photographer. I can't stress the importance of learning this program because it will ultimately, help you organize your photographs, catalog them and make the edit and retouching process so much easier.
I am working with Photoshop latest program which is Photoshop CC or Cloud. I am happy to teach you if you have a earlier version.
I presently am teaching two students how to use most of the features necessary to really make the most of this application. I love teaching both Photoshop and Lightroom because I have 25+ years working as a photographer and I can see how important it is to every photographer's work flow.
I am new to WyzAnt, but please, check out my student Bonnie's review of my work with her. I will make you enthusiastic to learn this program because I am enthusiastic. I will bring that energy to our sessions and always watch your back. I am not just a technician, but a photographer with a keen and experienced eye and this will help you when I teach you Photoshop or Lightroom.
