Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have been a teacher of ESOL and GED for many years. I also speak a couple of other languages (French, Spanish), and so have some appreciation for English from that perspective. In addition I have a lot of experience writing for corporate communications.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL (for adults) for many years, both at the Lado Institute in Washington, D.C., and at CAMBA, the Church Avenue Merchants Block Association in Brooklyn. I have worked with students from beginner to advanced levels, using the direct (or natural) method.

I am a native speaker of English, fluent in Spanish, conversant in French and at an intermediate level in American Sign Language. I have worked with students from many different language backgrounds including Spanish, French, Turkish, Arabic and Russian.

GED

I have had several years experience as program coordinator for an adult education program which focused on GED prep and computer literacy.

HTML

I have extensive web production experience as a developer, project manager, and information architect/UX designer for clients that have included The Weather Channel, Oppenheimer Funds, Cadillac and American Express.

I have extensive front- and back-end experience working in HTML, HTML5, DHTML, AJAX, CSS, Javascript, JQuery, PHP and MySQL.

JavaScript

I have been coding in Javascript for nearly 20 years. I started writing code (HTML) as a student in New York University's Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP), and have gone on to do web development in PHP, Actionscript and MySQL.

I have taught WyzAnt students in PHP, and basic computer literacy to GED students.

In teaching programming, I find it is often helpful to assess students' understanding of the basic concepts of programming. Once s/he has a grasp of the language's central metaphor, we can go on to tackle specific issues and problems.

Sometimes that means sketching out (literally) objects and data flows. In other cases, it is more helpful to draft an algorithm in pseudo-code. I.e., Writing out -- on paper -- the steps necessary to reach the desire result, without worrying about the syntax of the language.

Once the student has a "map," writing the actual code is usually pretty straightforward. In other words, once you can see the forest, navigating through the trees is usually no big deal.

Reading

I have had several years experience as an instructor and program coordinator for an adult education program, focused on Adult Basic Education, GED prep and computer literacy.

Sign Language

I am hearing, but I studied sign language for about a year at the Sign Language Center in Manhattan.

I am an intermediate level signer (I can hold a casual conversation), and am proficient in finger-spelling. I understand the various conceptual systems of ASL: fingerspelling, ideograms, idioms, qualifiers, use of space, basic grammar, etc. I was for a time one of the facilitators of the NYC ASL Meet-Ups and tutored many newcomers informally.

I am also conversant to fluent in English, Spanish and French, and have a deep appreciation of the similarities and differences between aural/oral and visual/manual languages.

TOEFL

I have taught ESL (for adults) for many years, using the direct (or natural) method. I am a native speaker of English, fluent in Spanish, conversant in French and at an intermediate level in American Sign Language. I have worked with students from many different language backgrounds including Spanish, French, Turkish, Arabic and Russian. Let me put my experience to work for you!
