Bio

I have been tutoring French, Spanish and English through an excellent Manhattan tutoring agency for over 5 years. I started tutoring over 10 years ago, in college, found I had a knack for it and loved doing it. In New York, I have tutored academic French and Spanish and also helped students prep for the SAT II and AP French exams. I recently started doing private tutoring for French conversation. (Fun not to have to teach to the test!) This past year, I did more English tutoring than usual, talking through themes and characters with a high school freshman and working with him on his writing. I'd love to do more English tutoring, specifically working through novels.

I have been a big reader my whole life and was an English major in college.

I learned French as an exchange student in France, through rather painful but very effective immersion. I took a few French courses in college and went back to France after college to live there for another 7 months. In New York City, I worked for a total of about 3 years for the French Government Tourist Office, spending the bulk of my day speaking with colleagues and clients in French.

I started learning Spanish when I was in secondary school in France. I continued taking courses in college, studied for a month in Costa Rica and learned a lot from Spanish roommates in... Ireland. A few years ago, I spent 5 months living/traveling in Argentina and Uruguay. I now live with Colombian roommates and work as a counselor at a hospital, where over half of my patients only speak Spanish.

ESL/ESOL,

ESL/ESOL

A native English speaker, I first tutored English as a foreign language in college, working with an international student on English and Religion (both with a lot of reading challenges that meant a lot of ESL help was needed). I also did volunteer English tutoring with Hispanic and Somali immigrants during college. After moving to New York, I volunteered at the International Center, again doing one-on-one ESL tutoring. I think that having learned foreign languages myself (French and Spanish), through both immersion and conversation as well as coursework, I'm better able to relate to and teach those learning English as a second language.

I learned French as an exchange student in France in high school. I took some French in college, started tutoring French in college, and went back to France for 7 months after graduating from college. I worked for about 3 years in a French office in New York speaking and writing in French most of the time. I've been tutoring French (along with other subjects) through a private Manhattan tutoring agency for over 5 years: mostly high school students, academic French (help with general coursework0 and also prep for SAT II and AP French exams. I recently started tutoring French conversation which has been a lot of fun!

Grammar

I have been a big reader my whole life, which is probably the best way to learn grammar. (My mother also deserves a lot of credit.) My knowledge of French and Spanish grammar also help. I've tutored English, reading, ESL and writing since college and grammar has been a part of tutoring each of those subjects.

I started tutoring Spanish in college and have been tutoring through private tutoring agency in Manhattan for over 5 years. I started learning Spanish when I was an exchange student in high school in France. I continued taking Spanish courses in college, studied for a month in Costa Rica and learned a ton from Spanish roommates while spending a semester abroad in... Ireland. I traveled/lived in Argentina and Uruguay for about 5 months a few years ago and have now taken up with Colombian roommates in New York. I speak for a large chunk of the day in my day job at a hospital. I love Spanish and at this point have been exposed to all different takes on the language!

I love to read, which helps with spelling. These days, I think that it's both easier and harder to learn to spell, given all the autocorrect software and, of course, Google.

I have been a big reader my whole life. I was an English major in college and have worked in book and magazine publishing. I also realize that reading is a struggle for a lot of people. I tutored English (ESL/reading) in college and have now been tutoring with a private Manhattan tutoring agency for over 5 years. Usually there aren't students signing up just for help with reading, but this past year I met with a student 2-3 times a week to go over his English texts (novels, plays) with him. So much fun for me and really helpful to him. I would love to do more of it!

I have worked as a magazine writer and editor, employed and freelance. I have also done freelance copywriting and copyediting. I was a writer tutor in college (briefly) and have now been tutoring through a private Manahattan tutoring agency for over 5 years. There isn't as much demand for English tutors as for other subjects, but I've really enjoyed the tutoring I've done in writing! The student I worked with intensively over this past year made huge progress.
