Brown University (English, Music)
I'm a Manhattan-based tutor in primarily English, Music, Spanish, and computer software. Studied at Brown undergrad and Yale for grad. I've been tutoring since I was in high school, realizing my knack for it after friends would approach me for one-on-one help in all kinds of subjects after class. For me, tutoring is as much about teaching as it is about learning -- learning how a student learns, and tailoring the teaching approach to best fit the student.
A little more about me: I grew up on Long Island, and attended Brown University where I double-majored in English and Music, graduating with honors. After college, I spent a few months living in Madrid, Spain, where I honed my Spanish language skills. Tutoring is a nice supplement to my primary work, which is sound design and music composition for theatre. I've been studying voice and guitar for 9 years, and can give singing, ear training, and basic guitar lessons as well. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I studied music composition at Brown University under Gerald Shapiro. I completed a composition honors thesis, as well as coursework in orchestration, ear training, and music theory. I teach the basics of counterpoint, voice leading, and harmony before delving into the specific style of music the student is interested in composing.
I have been playing guitar for 8 years, initially self-taught and then training under several private instructors. I studied Music at Brown University, and while I incorporate some music theory into my guitar lessons, I do not require students to be able to read music or have any prior musical background. I cater my lessons to the type of music that the student wants to be able to play, although I have the most experience in the genres of rock and folk. Can also tutor in bass guitar.
I can help you develop your tone, intonation, breath support, and range by teaching you proper singing techniques and working through specific pieces of vocal music with you. I have been singing in choirs ever since I can remember, and was classically trained in voice from the age of 16. I studied Music at Brown University, and served as the Music Director of a co-ed jazz singing group that competed with similar groups at the national level. I also have a background in rock/pop music and musical theatre, and my teaching style values these different modes of singing equally. Since I have a degree in Music, I can also help you become a better musician by teaching you a little music theory, rhythm, and sight singing.
