About Jimmy

As a recipient of The Most Outstanding Senior Award in Latin in High School, 3+ years of experience tutoring college students at Denison University's Academic Support and Enrichment Center, and over a year of tutoring multiple grades levels on WyzAnt, I have had tremendous success in helping students who struggle with Latin grammar, concepts, and translations using my own effective methods. My students have gone from failing and earning D's on their tests to achieving high B's and A's--all in a matter of weeks. My experience working with students has afforded me with a tremendous skill set in developing a curriculum to match each student's individual learning ability. My goal is to provide the student with a step-by-step program that will enhance his or hers ability to autonomously translate Latin sentences quickly and effortlessly.

My approach to tutoring is manifested in a technique I call the "puzzle strategy." Here, I invite the student to 'dissect' the sentence, i.e. identify and isolate each different grammatical structure in Latin such as the subject(s), verb(s), object(s), etc. In this way, the sentence seems less disorganized and ambiguous but rather more manageable and lucid. Thus, translating becomes easier, and with repetition, it becomes routine. This approach also affords the student with the ability to focus on one aspect of the sentence at a time, which mitigates the confusion many students face when attempting to translate a sentence using what I call "word jumble." Once the student identifies and establishes each piece of the sentence, the puzzle becomes much easier to solve. This method has proven successful and guarantees improvement no matter the struggles beforehand.

I am currently located on Long Island on the South Shore. I am willing to travel to most locations in Nassau County and New York City, and I am also available for online sessions. My availability during the week is after 6:00 p.m. and any time on the weekend. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or inquiries about my credentials or to schedule an initial lesson. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Sincerely
Jimmy

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Latin

In addition to my decade-long experience taking Latin courses, I have also tutored middle school, high school, and college students for over three years, where I have helped many students succeed--all with either previous or no experience whatsoever. In high school, the language department bestowed upon me The Most Outstanding Senior in Latin award, which is an honor granted to one senior who has demonstrated tremendous skill and acumen in Latin over the course of four years. This award afforded me with the educational capacity to take advanced Latin courses in college, fortifying my prowess with Latin grammar, syntax, and reading comprehension. My educational background, along with my myriad years of experience with Latin, has bolstered my credentials as an effective, collaborative, and accommodating tutor.
