About Mark

Hi there, and welcome to my profile page!

I hold a Master's Degree from Oxford University and studied as a Special Student at Columbia University in their graduate program.

I attended Harrow School in the UK, the same famous high school that was attended by Winston Churchill, writer Sir Terence Rattigan, poet Lord Byron, and actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Cary Elwes. The school is known for its excellent English department and drama, and from an early age, I was brought up on some of the finest English literature and Shakespeare plays.

A number of my articles have been published in different newspapers, and an essay of mine was highly commended for the Winston Churchill Essay Prize. I have also given well-received readings of my poetry at arts events, and have directed plays, receiving critical acclaim in the local press. I've further employed my expertise in English in a number of other fields.

I have 10 years’ teaching experience, from 7-year-olds to college students, both native-born and foreign, in classrooms and one-on-one.

My subject specialties are English, History, and certain areas of Art History. I am also well-read and knowledgeable about many other areas, and sometimes refer to these if they can help the student to better understand a point in the subject we are studying.

Many of my students initially showed little interest or knowledge in these subjects, but within a short time I had success in changing their attitudes and ability. I enjoy getting to know the student and creating a good rapport; and try to bring out their full potential by making ideas accessible in a way that they can relate to and enjoy. I aim to create interest by keeping the lesson fresh and lively, and by actively involving the student.

So if you or your child is struggling with writing or composition, reading or reading comprehension, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, conversation or public speaking, critical thinking, or an understanding of literature, you have come to the right place. I’m also available if you need to consult with someone in any area related to these.

Learning doesn’t have to be unpleasant, and I look forward to helping you very soon! :>)

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
