About Duane

I'm a full time Dad and have 6 year old. I have been teaching science for 15 years, and prior to that I worked in the field of biomedical research for 5 years. I am a committed teacher who has worked as a tutor for home schooled students as well as students in need of help learning challenging topics in science. I volunteer at a small school in Bedford Stuyvesant in an attempt to bring stronger and more diverse schools to the area. My background as an educator in progressive schools has helped me become a better listener to student's needs. I work in cooperation with the student's strengths and weakness to overcome the difficulties that come from learning challenging concepts in science. My research background allows me to create demonstrations and simple experiments that can shed light on these concepts. I'm a full time Dad and have 6 year old. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored math at both the middle and high school levels when I worked in education. As a research scientist, there is great demand to have good sound math computation. As a tutor, I try to make math apply to real situations, so that my students get a greater understanding of the concepts.

Biology

I have taught biology in middle school as well as high school for a total of 15 years. I completed my degree (BS) in biochemistry from the Stony Brook University. Finally, I worked in basic science research laboratories in Stony Brook and Harvard and I have been published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Chemistry

I taught chemistry at the high school level and tutored students taking the Chemistry Regents. I make chemistry applicable to things seen everyday and perform laboratory exercises and demonstrates that illuminate aspects of the subject. I design chemistry questions that help students apply concepts and allow me to evaluate their progress. I have a degree (BS) Biochemistry and have worked in basic science laboratories for five years.

Elementary Science

I worked with children as young as 2nd grade to student in college teaching science concepts in biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science.

Physical Science

I have taught physical science for 12 years and I use simple demonstrations and real world examples to help student understand physical science. I also explain how these concepts will be applied to math, chemistry, and physics in high school.

Regents

As a high school teacher, I have prepared many students in the areas chemistry and biology (living environment) to take standardized tests both at the state level and college preparatory level. My goal in this pursuit in to help my students gain a good grasp on the concepts and to show them area competency will be challenged on these assessments. The other area that is important is confidence and to help my students gain this trait is equally as important as the content that they are learning

SAT Math

I have worked for several organizations that provide test prep for SAT, SAT 2, ACT, ASVAB and NYS regents. I have worked with students at all levels of math from 2nd to 12th grade. I provide a nonjudgemental atmosphere to learn and understand math concepts. I instruct students with tips to make math computation easy as well as understandable in order to create the confidence needed for standardized test.

Duane's Tutoring Style

Duane taught me how to understand the different concept of physics not just the mathematical part of it. He showed me how all the formulas used in physics have the same root and you can manipulate the formulas to create formulas that works for you.
