I believe in a student-centered approach to tutoring, for children or adults. This can mean teaching reading using books or stories that relate to a person's life, teaching math by starting with a student's logical thought process, or teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) by acting out real-life situations. Of course, new skills may be introduced that have their own rules and challenges, but it is all with the awareness that every student has their own purposes and desires and is growing more into herself or himself through the learning activities.
I studied at an acting school and performed in plays in New York before studying speech and language pathology, which led to studying and earning a master's degree in literacy. At the same time, I volunteered in an Adult Basic Education class, where I discovered the excitement and graciousness of adult students. When I received my master's, I tutored second and third graders in public school. They became most engaged when they created puppet shows together from books they were reading. I also tutored English and mathematics privately. Both in the adult class and in the public school, I worked with some students who were from other countries and needed help with English, so I became very interested in teaching English to immigrants and earned a certificate in TESOL. From that time on, I taught ESOL. In adult classes, I used a theme-based approach in addition to other methods such as songs and vocabulary and grammar games. After a couple years, I began to also work in a college writing center, where I now tutor and lead conversation groups. All of the study has contributed to the tutoring, from the drama to accent reduction in the speech/language pathology program to the teaching of reading and writing to the grammar, vocabulary, and conversation techniques for ESOL. I enjoy very much the relationships with students and the moments of shared accomplishments.
During my whole life, I have also performed as a singer. For several years, I have taught voice, including ear training, breathing, tone quality, phrasing, and singing freely and with commitment. I have shared vocal instruction with the other members of groups I sing with as well as with private students. My training is classical, in a technique that also worked well for folk music.
I studied the teaching of math and had private students of third grade, sixth grade, eighth grade and ninth grade math.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
