I instill a deep level of understanding of the material that will not only prepare the student for tests, but also be able to apply these concepts to real world problems and build upon this knowledge in future classes. I encourage multiple ways of solving problems and never judge the student for not understanding quickly enough. I blend in critical thinking skills and estimations. I often estimate seemingly difficult calculations and show how I got there, which causes students to stop relying...

I concentrate on improving the student's mental flexibility about how to apply the rules to the system. Once understood, you can apply this skill to most math and science problems. Above all else, I seek to encourage an understanding and appreciation for the material, so that humanity can better solve its problems, sometimes with puns and jokes.

I prefer to talk about physics, chemistry, and calculus as they are thoroughly interrelated; however, I often must strengthen the student's algebra, geometry, trigonometry, or precalculus in order to get the most out of physics or chemistry. I currently offer services in Manhattan, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. I am more of an academic coach than a tutor. I am always available by phone or email for any questions. I will rarely just give the answer; I prefer to walk you toward the solution and assist you past your weak points. I am excellent at finding the piece of information or logic that allows everything to flow for you. I customize each lesson for the way you think. I relate the material to things you already understand and show how it is interconnected. I often make up examples using your hobbies and interests and can even show you how certain equations affected history or art. I try to be as efficient as possible with our time by taking personal notes and reflecting on what did or didn't work. After an adequate level of understanding is achieved, I focus on nuances in the material for speed on tests and implications to our daily lives that flow from taking

After Calculus, I went on to study Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations, two disciplines that build on Calculus and are extremely helpful to many professions, especially engineers. Over the years, I have helped many confused students realize that Calculus is much simpler than most of the math that they have seen before.

I have seen every type of question asked backwards and forwards, perfecting a method to identify and most optimally solve each type of problem. This is more of a method of thinking consistent with many science classes. If the student’s algebraic, geometrical, or logical foundation is not up to par, I can help build the student’s mathematical toolbox. I learned the value of an excellent tutor firsthand for SAT Math. She was able to offer keen insights and tricks to solve problems on the test where time is so valuable. I will sometimes use a timer for a problem to get the student used to thinking quickly and clearly for the test. My sessions can be rigorous and intense but very rewarding.

I have prepared students for the TACHS, SHSAT,COOP,and HSPT and scored in the 99th percentile in the COOP and HSPT myself. Using my background in Latin, I help students break vocabulary words into their bases. Math is usually the most difficult area, so I spend the most time here and stress estimations and proportions. Students usually see how verbal proportions are analogies. I focus on the common ideas in Grammar and Reading Comprehension and use paper cutouts to elucidate the tricky "Abilities" section of the TACHS. I use expected value and other mathematical techniques to teach optimal strategies for test taking.

There are many nuances to the Regents that anyone unfamiliar with the test could waste a lot of time solving problems the long way. On tests like these, time is your worst enemy. I can show you how to optimize your time, familiarize you with their logic, and strengthen any weaknesses in your knowledge so that you can get your highest score possible. I have successfully tutored many students from schools such as Pace, NYU, Columbia, Stuyvesant, SI Tech, Xavier, LaGuardia, Murrow, Brooklyn Tech, Sacred Heart, St. Joseph Hill and many others.

Fantastic Tutor

John walks in the door and starts talking Chemistry. His teaching is dynamic and interactive. After struggling through an honors chem class for half of the year, I engaged John to tutor my son. The class was geared towards taking the SAT 2 Chem exam and my son had been scoring well below class average on many of the exams. Long story short, with John's help he ended up scoring 770/800 on the Chem SAT 2. John was pleasant, optimistic, upbeat, and a pleasure to deal with and the proof is in the results.

Great Tutor!

I had John as a tutor for Calculus 1 and 2 at Rutgers in New Brunswick. Both classes are very difficult and prior to having him as a tutor I was in no place to pass the class at all. I passed both classes thanks to his help despite having possibly the worst Calc 1 professor on the planet. John never had issues with scheduling and always got back to any questions I had, even when not Calc related (I also take Physics and occasionally had a question or 2, which he had no problems helping me with). I highly recommend!

We hired John to prepare our son for the NYS Chemistry Regents because he had a history of scoring below expectations on standardized tests. John clarified Chemistry beyond simple understanding of typical daily objectives, and general syllabus. He taught numerous concepts, critical thinking, and the, “how-tos" of analytical thinking; far exceeding the classroom teacher’s criterion. Furthermore, John enriched my son’s sophomore year beyond books, study guides, and worksheets. Specifically, he designed individualized instructional plans that surpassed state standards, engaging my son in the learning process with great success, and tremendous confidence. John meticulously addressed the relative topics highlighted in Chemistry standards, and regent’s exams. He typically prepared detailed, and carefully outlined study guides.
