About Rachel

I have been tutoring since I was a college student. At that point, I taught high school students and helped them to excel on the SAT as well as in the various Regents exams. I graduated summa cum laude from Touro College, and now I am a graduate student working towards my PhD in history and teaching college part-time.

I have had the opportunity to teach hundreds of students in a college classroom. I have really enjoyed this experience, but I have found that many smart, motivated students lack the skills they need to maintain a strong GPA in college. To address this problem, I began to focus my high school tutoring on writing and critical analysis skills, and I worked one-on-one with some of my college students. I developed a system that focuses on developing reading comprehension, organized writing, and analytical thinking.

These skills enable you to succeed on standardized tests like the SAT, but also in English and humanities classes. This is also what I use to prepare students for the PSAT. Trust me, it works! Not only did I score 2220 on the SAT, but my PSAT score helped me to become a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist.

I care deeply about what I do, but I think what really distinguishes me from many other tutors is my flexibility and commitment to the individual. I work around my students' individual needs and learning styles so that hardworking students can achieve the academic success they deserve!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have taught American history as a college professor, in addition to privately tutoring high school students. My classes have been well reviewed by students. I have the knowledge to help you get ahead, and I will guide you in developing the writing and critical thinking skills that are fundamental to this subject. And while we are at it, I will endeavor to make history fun!

English

I have taught English privately for five years, both at the high school and college level. I enjoy improving my students' writing skills so that they can succeed academically and communicate more effectively! I can help you prepare for the English Regents exam, SAT, GRE, or GED.

Regents

I have taught global and American history to college classes. I am also qualified to teach English, as I'm a Princeton Review SAT teacher, and I have experience helping students develop their reading and writing skills. I am quite familiar with the Regents curriculum in English and history.

SAT Writing

As a private tutor and part-time college professor at CUNY, I have worked with hundreds of students to ensure their college readiness and success. In the liberal arts, strong writing skills are crucial for success, and I have developed a systematic curriculum through which any student can become a better writer. While I have put a great deal of care into developing my approach, I am also sensitive to your needs and preferences as the student. Let me know how best to help you. I look forward to working together!

World History

I have taught World History and American History to high school and college students for 5 years. History involves a lot of critical thinking, as well as a deep understanding of political and social issues. I enjoy sharing my love of this subject with others.

Writing

I have taught language and writing skills to high school and college students for five years now, as both teacher and tutor. I love to help writers increase their confidence and build communication skills, since the ability to write an essay is deeply valuable in both the academic and professional worlds. My approach is student-based, and begins with an evaluation of the writer's strengths.
