About Matthew

Matthew is a licensed teacher with three years of experience in teaching Spanish and two years of experience in online tutoring. He also has worked with students on the autistic spectrum as a therapeutic staff support and volunteered in a children's grief support group. Matthew graduated from Allegheny College with a Bachelor of the Arts (summa cum laude) in Music and Spanish and a minor in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and afterwards attained a Master's of the Arts in Teaching from the University of Pittsburgh. Matt loves the opportunity to work directly with students of all ages and levels. He is enthusiastic about forming relationships with his students, and he is passionate about guiding his students as they strive to make connections; he always attempts to teach students how to think, not tell them what to think.

Matthew immersed himself in the study of Spanish language and culture during his year abroad in Seville, Spain. During this year, he also studied traditional flamenco guitar accompaniment. This beautiful musical tradition became the basis for his undergraduate thesis at Allegheny College, for which he received honors from both the Spanish and Music departments. Matt also has experience with many other dialects of Spanish from communicating with his many Cuban relatives and watching media from around the world. Since returning from Spain, Matt has continually sought to improve his fluency by reading and viewing media in Spanish, and has since begun to learn French through the same immersive methods.

Matt has experience teaching Spanish one-on-one, online, and in the classroom, and loves to teach through both traditional and immersive methods. He is a creative teacher and believes that all students require individualized approaches. Matt is experienced in teaching Spanish, study skills, organizational skills, test-taking strategies, and even guitar, but he is also passionate about teaching math, science, language arts, and elementary education. He believes that learning can be fun, teaching should be engaging, and every subject has significance. In his free time, Matthew enjoys studying and listening to music, reading, watching films in other languages, and spending time outdoors.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I've worked with numerous students with ADD/ADHD. During my experience as an intern teacher at Colfax Pittsburgh, I taught many students grades 3-8 that were diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. I also had many students with ADHD during my two years as an online teacher with Connections Education.

Aspergers

Throughout my experience in education, I've worked with many students either identified as having Asperger's Syndrome or Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As an intern teacher at Colfax Pittsburgh, I had a number of students, grades 3-8, with ASD or Asperger's. As a therapeutic staff support (TSS) with Lycoming Therapeutic, I worked one-on-one with three students with high-functioning autism and ASD and implemented behavioral interventions with them.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a significant amount of experience teaching and working with elementary age students. My primary experience as a teacher in the traditional classroom environment was teaching Spanish to fourth- and fifth-graders, but I did teach other grades as well. During my year as an intern teacher, for two weeks I worked one-on-one with a kindergartener of first-grade age with learning difficulties.

English

I have a significant amount of experience teaching and working with elementary age students. My primary experience as a teacher in the traditional classroom environment was teaching Spanish to fourth- and fifth-graders, but I did teach other grades as well. During my year as an intern teacher, for two weeks I worked one-on-one with a kindergartner of first-grade age with learning difficulties.

Guitar

I've played the guitar for over 13 years and have a Bachelor of the Arts in Music with the guitar as my principle instrument from Allegheny College. I have studied many styles, including rock, jazz, classical, flamenco, fingerstyle acoustic, metal, progressive rock, punk, and others. I was employed as a guitar instructor at Robert M. Sides Music in Williamsport, PA, throughout 2013.

Music Theory

I received my Bachelor the Arts in Music from Allegheny College, and during my time their I studied Classical ("Tonal") theory. Throughout my studies after my undergraduate education, I began to more seriously study music theory from a Jazz-oriented perspective. I'm able to make the abstract ideas of music theory more accessible to my students that are just beginning their study.

Spanish

I'm certified to teach Spanish in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Ohio, and I have a Master of the Arts in Teaching, specializing in Foreign Language Education, from University of Pittsburgh. I also received a Bachelor of the Arts in Spanish from Allegheny College, and I spent two semesters abroad in Seville Spain studying Spanish culture, language, and music. I have three years of experience teaching, one in the public school environment, and two in the online environment with Connections Education. I've had the pleasure of working with students of all ages, abilities, and language levels.

I'm fluent in Spanish, but I am not a native speaker. The experience of learning to speak Spanish with no prior knowledge has been helpful for me as a teacher because I have experienced what my students are going through, as well as the difficulties that come along the way and potential ways to surpass them.
