About Ned

I am a NY-based tutoring pro, writing professional, and teacher. I teach all ages at the Abrons Arts Center on the Lower East Side, and have tutored for the SAT as well as general Writing and English skills here in New York City. I have had copywriting jobs for various companies, including Perfectly Frank Inc., LOT 379, and Spreemo. I graduated from Brown University in May 2012 with an English degree. While at Brown, I studied a wide variety of subjects, from history to writing to semiotics, with a central focus on literature and writing. I was awarded a named scholarship and arts award and was active in extracurriculars as a musician, a producer of new work, and an actor. I take tremendous pride in my experiences teaching and tutoring since graduation, and especially enjoy helping pupils reach an understanding and appreciation for new material and transforming their attitude about academics and their own ambitions. I want to help my students figure out what it is about each subject that they love. My education at a competitive private high school and my studies at Brown have encouraged a rigorous approach, an attention to detail, and a strong work ethic. I'm a creative, broad thinker who approaches learning with the right balance of challenge and enjoyment. I think curiosity is contagious. Helping pupils identify their truest, most integrated interest in any given subject is the best way to keep them engaged. I look forward to helping you reach your highest potential. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Literature

I studied English with a focus on American Literature at Brown University. I am an avid reader and love literature and writing. At Brown, I took classes on Faulkner, Shakespeare, 19th century American literature, the 20th century novel, early American settlers literature, 20th century drama, the postcolonial novel, cultural semiotics, and more. I am patient with pupils and like to keep learning engaging and challenging.

Voice (Music)

I have studied voice classically for 12 years. I attended the Tanglewood Institute's Young Artists Vocal Program in 2007, was a member of Brown's Applied Vocal Program, and have sung for paid gigs in Providence and in my hometown in Massachusetts. I most recently perfomed in an original musical in New York City in July in the lead role. I have studied classical, musical theatre, and jazz singing and am versatile, flexible, and experienced.
