About Daniel

Hi! I am a Full-Stack Developer with years of experience teaching and tutoring. I currently work at a start up, where I work with Ruby on Rails and ReactJS. I have a B.A. from Wesleyan University in Mathematics and Philosophy and a completed the Web Development Immersive course at General Assembly, where I am currently a TA.

For over a decade, I've been teaching in many different contexts; I've conducted one-on-one sessions, worked at a learning center, taught in-classroom, taught online courses, etc, etc. It's something I've always loved doing, and I'm willing to humbly aver that I've gotten pretty good at it. I am a highly focused, hard working, analytical thinker. I love the challenge of articulating difficult concepts in clear, concise language and of pinpointing and untangling other's conceptual misunderstandings. These qualities make me both highly effective as a tutor and probably kind of insufferable at parties.

Here are some of my specialties:

Computer Programming:
Ultimately, programming is a lot of fun; it's about solving puzzles and building cool things. I try to get my students to see this, while giving them the foundational conceptual knowledge they need to move forward. I've taught students in college level Computer Science courses, programming Bootcamps, and students learning independently. I've taught JavaScript, Python, and Ruby, as well as related Web-Development technologies like Ruby on Rails, Node-Express, HTML/CSS, Sinatra, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and more.

Mathematics:
Once a Math geek, always a Math geek. I tend to focus on College/ Late High School level subjects, like Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Set Theory, though I also tutor younger students in more fundamental subjects, like Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, or just about anything else you can mention.

Test Prep:
I've worked for several test-prep companies and have ample experience prepping students for various exams, particularly the SAT.

Writing:
Did I mention I also write? Well I do, and I've been published in several literary magazines. I've taught creative writing, literature, and standard expository essay writing.

Drop me a line!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reads my mind and knows what what to explain

Daniel always know what to explain and when to explain as you go about your lesson with him. And even if you do something stupid he copes with it and explains it very patiently in a way you would understand.
