Indiana University - Bloomington, IN (Master's)
I studied Latin in high school and at Kenyon College before receiving a Master's in Classical Studies from Indiana University. In graduate school I taught Latin for two years at both the introductory and intermediate levels, writing all lesson plans, tests, and quizzes. I've worked with students of different ages, from a variety of backgrounds, and with varying reasons for taking Latin, from a desire to read a beloved author in the original language to pragmatic credit fulfillment.
I'm familiar with a number of current introductory texts, AP curriculum, and I've taught a course specifically on Virgil's Aeneid. I'm happy to supplement school instruction or conduct independent prepared/sight reading sessions for more advanced students. My interest in the history and literature of Ancient Rome is wide-ranging, but I have a particular fondness for rhetoric and political theory. Charles is an amazing Latin tutor. Although my daughter only has a one hour lesson per week with him for the last few months, She has aced most of her tests and quizzes. I couldn't be any happier with Charles' tutoring. I highly recommend Charles to anyone who is looking for a Latin tutor.
Charles took us through more introductory Latin sentence structure and the first 2 conjugations. He also explained how we would progress through additional chapters.
I highly recommend Charles as a Latin tutor. He has been working with my ninth grade son for several weeks and his test scores are finally going up. My son has struggled with Latin for some time now and with the help of Charles, the subject is finally starting to make sense. It has been a wonderful experience.
Charles is an excellent tutor who gives well-paced support to our son who is a first year Latin student. Charles has a clear mastery of the subject matter and and wonderful educational style.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a MA in Classical Studies from Indiana University. The degree requirements, in addition to knowledge of Greek and Latin, included passing comprehensive exams on Greek and Latin culture, literature, and history.
In terms of teaching, I led a college-level class through Virgil's Aeneid. It was primarily a language course, but translation requires an understanding of context, and so I spent a fair amount of time lecturing on culture.
I have a Master's degree in Classics from Indiana University. This required passing an Ancient Greek sight reading exam. I've had over 6 years of Greek between undergrad and graduate school, including the summer intensive course at the University of Chicago.
