About Georgia

I have three years’ experience teaching English at the college level, including courses in composition, technical writing, and fiction writing. I have also taught English composition in the CUNY system, focusing on basic styles of argument, critical reading, and correct grammar usage.

For five years I taught in the Lower School (first and third grades) at Saint Ann's School. Outside the classroom, I worked one-on-one with students aged 8-10 on reading, writing, and study skills.

Currently, I tutor students across China in English speaking/listening, helping them develop confidence with the language. I also assist Chinese applicants to American programs of study with editing and advising.

With a B.A. in English (Writing Concentration) from Barnard College (GPA 3.52) and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing (Fiction, GPA 4.0) from the University of Florida, I am a stickler for grammar and punctuation and a lover of literature with experience of young children and students with special needs.

I encourage you to contact me if you feel that I can be of help to you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught first grade for two years, third grade for three years, and substitute taught preschool, first, second, and third grades for one-and-a-half years (all at Saint Ann's, a private school in Brooklyn Heights). In my full-time position as an associate and co-teacher, I designed lessons, prepared activities, and taught a variety of curricula, including jazz, Norse mythology, and Arthurian legend. In third grade, our writing curriculum focused on writing stories, reading and discussing literature, learning cursive handwriting, and studying language arts. In first grade, we taught the children reading, writing, and spelling, read them stories, and conducted small reading groups that read and discussed books. We also spent a lot of time working on phonics.

ESL/ESOL

I have been a college instructor of English composition, technical writing, and fiction writing, and I currently tutor students in China in conversational English. I also coach US college students in academic writing and advise foreign students on applications to American programs of study.

Writing

I edit application materials for Chinese students (and their teachers) interested in American programs of study. I am a published writer and former instructor of college English courses, including composition, fiction writing, and technical writing.
