Rhode island School of Design
Hi! My name is Robin, and I'm a professional working artist showing in Chelsea and a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. I also teach painting at the undergraduate and graduate level at School of Visual Arts and New York Academy of Art.
I'm offering lessons to children, teenagers or adults interested in developing their creative abilities. These private or group lessons can be tailored to meet each student's individual needs. I teach painting, drawing and college portfolio preparation. Whether you are a student, an amateur artist, designer, or illustrator, I can help you master the tools you will need to take your craft to the next level. I can teach you fundamental observational drawing and painting skills while also honing your strengths and developing your unique point of view. I can also help you explore new mediums or approaches to art making. If your teen is applying to art school, I'll review their work, assess where improvement is needed, and help to build a strong portfolio and application. Previous students have been accepted to top level art colleges and even received full ride scholarships. I will design lessons specifically for your child's interests and abilities, including trips to artist's studios, museums, or galleries. I am able to host lessons in my studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, or I'm happy to come to you!
Private art lessons were an invaluable part of my early art training, and were well worth the investment. They can also be an excellent way to keep your mind and spirit active and engaged with the world around you. Let's get started! Hi! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I use Photoshop heavily in my own artistic practice. I can teach you how to draw and create original imagery using the program and also how to manipulate and improve existing photographs. Once you understand the language of the program and its interface, working with it will become natural with practice. If you have a drawing tablet that connects to your computer, that will assist you even more in mastering this program. Photoshop is one of those programs you will never regret learning how to use. It will come in handy in so many ways whether you are a professional artist or just a creative person. Lets get you started!
Drawing, like any art form, requires practice and persistence. It also requires a curious, investigative mind and an aptitude for the act of looking. I will teach students unique and innovative approaches to mark making, while also developing their ability to observe and translate the physical world into two-dimensions. Students will learn how to begin to capture a form with a loose gestural drawing, then slowly crosscheck its proportions, adjust line weights, and fine-tune its values and tonal gradations until a convincing rendering emerges. Beyond just observational drawing, a more abstract intuitive approach can also be applied, exploring medium, surface, design, and composition. I am proficient in many mediums including, but not limited to, graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, chalk pastel, oil pastel, and pen and ink. I am also capable of assisting college applicants in compiling a strong portfolio and improving an art school application. Many art programs look for solid fundamental drawing skills, a unique point of view, and a strong vision. I will tutor students toward this end.
I have been painting for my entire life, and since graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2006 have been regularly creating and exhibiting my work. I am passionate about painting. This practice requires a specialized set of skills that I am highly qualified to impart due to my almost daily interaction with the medium for well over a decade. I will teach students fundamental techniques including color mixing and color theory, paint handling, the properties of assorted brushes and other tools, and traditional as well as experimental painting approaches. Students will learn how to stretch a canvas, prepare various grounds, lay out a composition, employ under painting techniques, and properly use thinners, mediums, and solvents. I am most qualified to teach oil and acrylic painting and can explain the unique properties and best applications of each. Because of the time consuming nature of this practice, lessons should be scheduled in two-hour sessions at minimum.
