About Rachel

I'm a warm and friendly tutor who wants to make the learning experience as interesting, engaging, and fun as possible. I am committed to finding the learning style that works best for each individual student. I graduated from the University of Colorado in 2001 with a BA in English literature, obtained an MFA in creative writing from NYU, and have worked as a writer, adjunct professor, and textbook editor. Now at 37 I have made a career shift to nursing. I believe that we learn our whole lives long, both in the classroom and out. My strengths lie in my verbal and language skills (my parents were New Yorker editors and I grew up in a household with a LOT of books!) and I got an 800 on my verbal SAT. I have a eleven-year-old son, and some of my happiest times are reading with him and exploring the wonderful city in which we live. If you're looking for a warm, honest, funny, engaging and personable tutor, please don't hesitate to contact me. I believe that learning should be a collaborative experience and I am committed to working with students and their families (for younger students) to craft a lesson plan that best suits the needs of each student. Because no two people learn in the same way, I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. I do assign homework after each lesson, however, to reinforce what my students have learned. I also provide periodic progress reports and assessments. Every student has different strengths, and I am adept at helping students identify and utilize their learning strengths and style.
Thank you for your time and interest. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you or your child achieve academic success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a 7-year-old son and have worked as a first-grade teacher, a preschool teacher, and a children's textbook editor, so I am quite experienced in the elementary education field. I also received an MFA in creative writing from NYU, so I am both familiar with and have a love for the written word. My passion is for teaching language arts, and I love making reading and writing fun for my students.

Phonics

I am a graduate of NYU's MFA program and have a seven-year-old son who had some difficulty in learning to read. I am very comfortable with the written word at any level, any my experiences helping my son improve his reading and writing skills helped me hone my skills as a reading, writing, English, and phonics tutor. I have worked as a preschool teacher, as well, helping children with early reading and prereading skills.

Reading

I grew up in a family of readers (my parents were both New Yorker editors) and I have an MFA in Creative Writing from NYU. I believe that reading should be as enjoyable an experience as possible. My seven-year-old had some difficulty learning to read, and one strategy that I found effective was finding books that he really wanted to read. I have worked as a preschool teacher with early readers and pre-literate children, and as a children's textbook editor. I am eager to help find a strategy that works for each individual child, and help them explore the wonderful world of children's literature, from Dr Seuss to Roald Dahl to C.S. Lewis.

SAT Reading

I have a MFA in Creative Writing and have worked both as a teacher and as a textbook editor. I received (although at 32, this was quite a few years ago :) an 800 on my Verbal SAT. I am skilled at making learning fun, and teaching the test-taking skills that help students excel on the SAT. I believe that the SAT is in no way a test that measures intelligence ; rather it focuses on test-taking skills. I am committed to helping each student hone his or her test-taking skills.
