About Emily

My Background:
I earned an M.S. in physics while teaching two years of introductory physics at UC Davis as a graduate teaching assistant and Ph.D. candidate. I worked with the Physics Education Research Group at UC Davis, and have since written a complete high school physics curriculum based on the Common Core Standards. I have four years of lab research experience between an internship at NASA/NSSTC's Gamma-Ray Research Group and physics groups at the University of Virginia and UC Davis. I have been teaching and tutoring college level math and science for five years, and recently taught calculus, physics and astronomy part-time at a private high school in Woodland Hills, CA before moving to Brooklyn.

Teaching Philosophy:
Research shows that every student learns best when they are guided toward making their own mental models of subject matter. My goal as a teacher/tutor is to help a student find his or her own way toward becoming a self-starter and self-motivated learner. I do this by developing problem solving skills, executive functioning skills, building academic and personal confidence, and presenting material in innovative ways.

I also specialize in working with young people who have "Learning Differences" such as dyslexia and dyscalculia. I've often found that these students have very unique and often brilliant perspectives on the subjects they are learning. I work with middle and high school students, as well as college level students.

I am available to teach accredited homeschool courses. Email me for more information and references.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Differential Equations

I have a M.S. in physics from UC Davis. Such a degree requires extensive background in mathematics, including differential equations, linear algebra and advanced, mult-variate calculus. I completed my first course of Diff.Eq. as an undergraduate at the University of Virginia, and have since completed courses such as Advanced Calculus, and graduate level math courses. I have extensive knowledge of the function, form and application of Diff. Eq's.

Physics

I completed a M.S in physics at the University of California Davis and have been teaching physics and math for the last 5 years.

Physics tutor — Emily was terrific with my girls-- and frankly, give the male driven nature of most STEM programs, I think they found her a refreshing as well as a knowledgeable tutor. She was patient and provided clear direction/ information; most importantly, my girls felt comfortable stopping and questioning her regarding topics they felt more help was required. Thanks so much. ...
