I am in my 4th year of teaching middle school science and I love it! I taught two years of 8th grade science (Genetics, Evolution, Astronomy and Controlled Experimentation) and am currently completing my second year of teaching 6th grade science (Ecology, Biology/Life Science, Simple Machines and Controlled Experimentation). My teaching approach is largely inquiry based (students do most of the discovering) but I also interweave traditional teaching methods e.g. memorization of scientific vocabulary.
I also enjoy prepping students for the Living Environment Regents; I have taught summer school twice and on Saturdays for this sole purpose. Last summer 17 of my 22 students passed the Living Environment regents. Half of these students passed with a grade of 70 or higher--that's a big jump from the 50's and 60's range! I know the content very well since I entered the teaching field with a strong background in science and only learned more through the years. I work hard to be prepared and to deliver the most important information that needs to be mastered in order to do well on the LE regents and other tests. If the student is committed to reaching his or her goal, then the possibility of doing well on the test is very realistic.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Biology major, emphasis on molecular biology.
Genetics is the study of gene expression and their influence on an organism's traits.
I have taken a year's worth of genetics courses in college. I took an introductory genetics class as well as a course in the molecular genetics of eukaryotic organisms. I also taught genetics for 2 years as part of the 8th grade science curriculum in NYC.
I have taught 2 summer school sessions (2010 and 2011). Out of 22 students, 17 passed the LE regents. Half of these students did so with a 70 or above. I also tutored one student last year who failed the LE regents. He passed with a 70.
