In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Teaching English as a Foreign Language involves teaching students the four basic skills of communication in English: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. They will learn to master various subjects and skill areas such as vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, idioms, and pronunciation in each of the four basic skills. Beginner students learn the essentials of grammar such as pronouns, basic verbs and basic tenses, as well as comprehensive vocab to enable them to have simple conversations. Advanced students move on to more complex grammar and perfecting pronunciation, idiomatic language use, and can engage longer and more challenging material such as books and movies.
