I am a very experienced teacher of reading and writing and a published author. It is my passion to work with students and watch them progress, especially in any kind of writing. Students often have great ideas but have become frustrated in their attempts to expressing them forcefully on paper. I use a combination of writing process and some instruction in the mechanics of writing when necessary to improve the work. When students are having trouble deciding what to write, I work with them to brainstorm and cull possible topics for their work. Students learn how to draft and revise, use quotations to support their theses and if writing a research paper, how to cite and construct an argument.
I have taught students from sixth grade to college and have both independent school and public school experience. I also have a great track record helping kids get into the college of their choice with a compelling, well-written essay.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
When I had my own tutoring business in New Jersey, college counseling was one of my primary concentrations. Students would come to me for help with finding the right topic and creating the Common Application and supplemental essays. I also advised students and parents as to what colleges might be good fits for the student. In addition, I offered a full service package in which I monitored the student throughput the application process, kept track of their deadlines and made sure that they submitted the strongest applications possible. I had a fine reputation and helped many students.
I have an MA from Teachers College, Columbia University, in English Education, and have had more than 25 years of experience teaching middle school Language Arts, high school writing and literature and college freshman composition. I excel at discussing and analyzing both fiction and non fiction prose with students, helping them to find topics to write critical and personal essays and improve their mechanical skills (spelling, grammar, sentence construction). I am a published writer and consider writing, and helping students understand the writing process to be my specialty. I love interacting with students and have gotten extremely positive feedback over the years that students both like me and think I am an excellent teacher.
Unlike many English teachers, I consider a separate study of grammar within the larger context of the middle and secondary English class to be be of utmost importance. It is not a substitute for the teaching of writing, nor a necessity for the composing process, but solid understanding of the parts of speech, parts of sentence, subject-verb agreement and use of verb tenses is imperative for producing a polished and skillful final product, especially in the upper grades.
It is also vital to for demonstrating competency in the Common Core Curriculum and in excelling at certain parts of the SAT.
I have an MA in English Education from Columbia University and have taught students from sixth grade to high school all aspects of the subject. Study Skills, which I also taught as a separate subject for two semesters, inevitably must be taught to many students, as a natural sense of organization and pacing is extremely rare. The acquisition of study skills is necessary for all subjects, but as it pertains to English: sixth and seventh graders often need to understand how to organize everything, from the sections of their notebooks to completing various categories of the ELA homework (Language Arts being an umbrella term that represents many different subjects and types of assignments). For older students, the need for study skills becomes most evident when they must tackle longer projects such as research papers that often extend over the course of several months. I have had extensive experience helping students overcome all of these organizational challenges.
I have an MA in English Education with a specialty in the teaching of writing from Teachers College at Columbia University and an MFA in Creative Writing from The City College of New York where I won the Tony Kushner Writing Award. I have taught writing, literature and grammar to levels from sixth grade all the way through college. I am also a published writer myself, having written two young adult novels in the late eighties, many book reviews in the nineties and a short story published by The Bellevue Literary Review in 2009. During all that time , I continued to teach writing, often to private students, and to work on a novel that I eventually decided to turn into a memoir. I believe that students learn how to write best when they realize that writing is a process; they must learn to let their ideas come to them in however a jumbled way that they come in a first draft, then revise and sharpen them in subsequent draft. I have an excellent rapport with most of the students I teach because I let them know that I understand ... writing is a scary undertaking!
