Hello. My name is Cate and I am ready to help you practice speaking and writing in English, either in person or via Skype.
Two years ago I earned a Level 4 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) through the University of Cambridge, the most rigorous and widely recognized credential for teaching English available without an additional B.A. or M.A. Though my experience with classroom teaching in English is limited, I am an experienced adult educator, having taught college credit courses and developed curriculum across a wide range of subjects. I have also tutored private students and can provide references, upon request.
Having spent most of my career as a labor and community organizer, I am now shifting to a career that combines English language instruction, writing, on-line social media, travel, photography and community building.
This shift reconnects me to:
1. My childhood roots in El Paso, a Texas-Mexican border city, where I grew up speaking more Spanish than many of my Mexican-American friends and learned first-hand how difficult it is to master the fine points of a second language.
2. The career I originally pursued a newspaper reporter and editor.
3. My fascination with people, travel, and other cultures. I was christened on the International Date Line on my way to living in Japan. The location reads: Davy Jones Locker. Within the United States, I have lived and worked in: Columbus/Dayton/Yellow Springs, Ohio; Davenport, Iowa; Little Rock, Arkansas; Mexico City, Mexico; New Orleans, Louisiana; Trenton, New Jersey; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Waterbury, Connecticut; Nashville, Tennessee; Watsonville, California; Puerto Rico; and, Washington, D.C. My travels abroad have included: Argentina, England, France, Italy, Guatemala, Germany, Holland, Austria, Mexico, Morocco, Panama, Peru, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, Scotland and Turkey.
I look forward both to getting to know you and to helping you become more fluent and comfortable with speaking and writing English. Hello. My name is Cate and I am ready to help you practice speaking and writing in English, either in person or via Skype.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
