About Nora

My teaching philosophy: Everyone has unique strengths and talents. Unfortunately, academic challenges can overshadow these positives, leaving you and your child feeling anxious and overwhelmed. Rather than merely tackling weaknesses, tutoring begins with the places where students are already shining. This philosophy is grounded in the cognitive science notion of bootstrapping. Simply put, humans have the extraordinary ability to use the mental resources we already have to scaffold places where we may be struggling. Additionally, when students begin from a place of success rather than failure, their frustration begins to melt away, and students find themselves accomplishing more than they ever imagined. During tutoring sessions, students will learn how to lean on their strengths to tackle challenges now and in the future. The result is that students will not only achieve their current academic goals but will also become more independent and confident, both academically and in meeting life’s challenges.

About me: I earned my BA (honors) in Linguistics from University College London and my MS and PhD in Cognitive Psychology from Rutgers University. Additionally, I received certification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from the University College London Language Centre; graduate certificates in Perceptual Science and Cognitive Science from Rutgers University; and training in the Orton Gillingham method of literacy instruction (highly effective for children with dyslexia) from Bank Street College of Education.

During my doctoral studies, I worked with monolingual and multilingual children of all ages—both typically developing children and those on the autism spectrum—as well as with adults. My research focused on the relationship between language development and other aspects of cognitive development and how these can support each other, which directly applies to my tutoring methods. I have published my research in peer reviewed journals and have presented my work at many national and international conferences and institutions.

For the past several years, I have worked as a consultant for the National Institute of Early Education Research, evaluating ways to improve early STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) education. In addition to my research and education policy work, I have had the opportunity to teach a wide variety of subjects: teaching various college classes (in both traditional and online formats); tutoring subjects from elementary- through college-level; instructing professionals in business English; and consulting prospective students in crafting admissions essays.

I recently completed postdoctoral work at New York University’s Steinhardt School for Culture, Education, and Human Development, in the Department of Teaching and Learning. In this position, I served as an educational coach, working closely with teachers and principals at schools throughout New York City to help them develop cognitive science-informed interventions for improving instruction. By immersing myself in New York City classrooms, I have developed close relationships with educators and students and have attained a deep sense of the skills necessary for success in today’s academic climate. My teaching and coaching experiences in and out of the classroom have solidified my love for helping individuals see themselves as competent, self-sufficient students with the skills to contribute their unique gifts to the world.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I earned a perfect score on the ACT English test, and I can help you achieve your best possible score. I have a deep understanding of grammar and writing and of how to communicate my own knowledge in a straightforward, accessible way. This ability stems from my extensive training: I hold a BA in linguistics and a PhD in cognitive psychology with a focus in language acquisition; I completed a postdoctoral position in literacy education; and I earned a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

ACT Reading

I hold a PhD in cognitive psychology with a focus in language acquisition. I recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship in literacy instruction. During this time, I coached and worked closely with teachers and principals throughout New York City, helping them to improve the reading programs in their schools. Additionally, I studied at Bank Street College of Education to learn the Orton Gillingham approach to reading instruction. Finally, I have certification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I am very familiar with the the ACT reading test and will use my theoretical knowledge and practical experience to help you or your child earn the highest score possible.

ADHD

I have a PhD in cognitive psychology. I completed a postdoctoral position in education. I have experience tutoring students with ADHD. With these students, I use my expertise in how people organize information and learn. In particular, I work on organizational and study skills, which students can transfer across multiple subject areas.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have a PhD in cognitive psychology. Additionally I completed a postdoctoral position in education. I also trained in the Orton Gillingham method of literacy instruction which is appropriate for children with learning disabilities. During my doctoral work, I conducted a study on cognitive development in children on the autism spectrum. For this project, I worked with 45 children on the spectrum and evaluated their development in language, categorization, executive function, metamemory, perception, and other areas of cognitive development. I have presented my findings from this work at several national conferences. Working with children on the spectrum has given me a deep understanding of the particular challenges they face and of ways to help them achieve their goals.

Biology

I am experienced at helping students prepare for the Living Environment (biology) Regents exam, succeed in middle or high school biology, and pass the biology section of the GED. I can help you with everything from good study skills to understanding concepts, memorizing formulas, making connections, and developing a love for this fascinating subject! With a PhD in psychology, biology is not far from my own area of expertise. References available upon request.

College Counseling

I have a PhD in cognitive psychology. I also completed a postdoctoral position in education. I have extensive experience helping students construct admissions essays and personal statements, which are an essential component of applications to college, graduate school, some internships, and even some private high schools. Crafting a compelling essay has many challenges. How can you sound personal without sounding trite? How can you make yourself stand out when other applicants may have similar credentials? How can you address weak points in your application without drawing too much attention to them? How much do you really need to alter an admissions essay if you are applying to a large number of schools? And most importantly, how can you translate all of the ideas swirling around in your head and heart into an essay that truly reflects the message you want to convey? I help students craft essays that earn them admission to the schools and programs of their choice. I work closely with students to help them articulate why they are seeking admission and what makes you a strong candidate. I work with students at any or all levels of the essay crafting process, from initial brainstorming to final touches, to ensure that students' final product represents them at their very best.

Additionally, from my undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral experiences, I have been a student at small liberal arts schools, big research universities, and international institutions. I can help students think through which schools will be right for them and give them concrete advice about how to gain admission.

Common Core

I have a PhD in cognitive psychology with a specialization in language development. I am currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Teaching and Learning at NYU. Through my work, I am consulting public school teachers and principals about ways to improve education, including making the Common Core work for their schools. I am also a consultant for the National Institute of Early Education Research. Finally, I have experience tutoring children in the Common Core.

Dyslexia

I have a PhD in cognitive psychology with a focus in language acquisition. I completed a postdoctoral fellowship in literacy education. Finally, I trained in the Orton Gillingham method of literacy instruction, which is especially well-suited to children with dyslexia.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a PhD in cognitive psychology with a focus on development. I am currently completing postdoctoral training in literacy education. Through this position, I have spent the last year and a half in elementary school classrooms. I have a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I also have training in the Orton Gillingham method of literacy instruction. Additionally, I am a consultant for the National Institute of Early Education Research. I have extensive experience tutoring and working with elementary school children, including children with special needs.

Elementary Math

Helping a student succeed in elementary school math is usually a matter of pinpointing exactly where the student is struggling. For example, does your child believe that he/she understands the concepts but still seems to be making many errors? It could be that your child is having trouble keeping numbers in the columns on lined paper. A very simple solution is to have your child turn the paper sideways, so that each number fits within a line. (If you're having trouble visualizing how this works, I can show you in person. It's a 2-second solution that has helped many children go from failing math to being A students.) By pinpointing the source of your child's struggles, I can help your child be his/her best. I use my training from my PhD in cognitive psychology and my postdoctoral position working closely with elementary school teachers to really get to know your child and help him/her tackle issues within elementary school math.

ESL/ESOL

I earned certification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from the University College London Language Centre, where I completed a year of coursework in second language acquisition, student taught in a class of 25 students from a wide variety of language backgrounds, and tutored students individually. Since completing my certification, I have taught and tutored English language learners in a variety of settings.

I worked as a teacher in a summer program for English language learning-children, from beginner to advanced levels. During this time, I also tutored students studying for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). I am also currently involved in a pro bono project as an English language tutor for asylees who have fled unbelievably difficult circumstances and sought refuge in the United States. This experience is enriching my understanding of how important confidence with a language can be for a person to feel at home.

English language tutoring with me is fully tailored to students’ goals. I use knowledge from my degree in linguistics, my PhD training, and from my TEFL coursework and teaching experiences to focus on any combination of skills including phonology (such as pronunciation and accent reduction), grammar, vocabulary, listening skills, conversational fluency, reading and writing, and more. I hav also taught Business English both to groups and to individuals at businesses including Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) and the accounting firm Rothstein Kass. Professionals, especially those who are already quite fluent in English, may have business-specific tutoring goals that will help them advance in their careers and will benefit the companies at which they work. For example, individuals may want to improve their English in terms of reading and writing business materials (from emails to reports), presentation skills, business conversational abilities (such as for networking or meetings), colloquial elements of language (such as idioms and connotations), and more advanced phonological elements (including expressing meaning through intonation). I will work together with you and your company to devise a tutoring plan that addresses everyone’s goals.

Grammar

I have had a love for grammar since I was in elementary school myself. I can tell you exactly why something is or isn't grammatically correct, and I can do it in a way that will make you love grammar too! An understanding of grammar is essential for success on the writing sections of standardized tests; for passing English as a Foreign language exams (e.g., the TOEFL); and for improving your writing more generally.

Although I primarily owe an amazing 7th grade teacher for my strong knowledge of grammar, this knowledge was solidified by my BA in linguistics, my certification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, my PhD focus in language acquisition, and my postdoctoral work in literacy education.

GRE

I earned almost perfect scores on the GRE writing and reading sections, and I can help you achieve your highest possible score.

I am very familiar with both the writing and reading sections. For the writing section in particular, I have a deep understanding of grammar, and I can give you "tricks" so you can essentially write your essays ahead of time, even though you won't know the prompts until the day of the test!

Handwriting

I have a PhD in cognitive psychology with a focus in language acquisition. I completed a postdoctoral fellowship in literacy education. Finally, I trained in the Orton Gillingham method of literacy instruction. Orton Gillingham, which is a multi-sensory method, is well-suited to children with handwriting difficulties.

Hard Of Hearing

I have experience working with children who are hard of hearing. I can use my expertise in language development to help your child with preliteracy skills, reading, and communication. I can also help you navigate the medical and educational resources available to your child. I bring with me a sensitivity to and an understanding of the complexity of having a child who is hard of hearing and can provide references from parents of hard of hearing children that I am currently working with.

During this time, I spent my days in NYC classrooms becoming an expert on current educational standards and coaching teachers and principals in methods for improving their instruction. I have also served as a consultant for the National Institute of Early Education Research. I am certified in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and I am trained in the Orton Gillingham method of literacy instruction from Bank Street College of Education. I have extensive teaching experience and am very sensitive to the various reasons families choose homeschooling as the best choice for their children. I will work with you to make sure your child meets or surpasses all requirements while tailoring lessons to your child's specific needs and interests.

I am an expert in phonics and have extensive tutoring experience.

Proofreading

I have published my work in top journals in my field and have also served as a reviewer and editor. I am an expert in grammar and can guarantee that I will leave your writing infallible. I also have years of experience helping students craft essays that earn them admission to the schools and programs of their choice. I will work closely with you to help you articulate why you are seeking admission and what makes you a strong candidate. Then I will consult with you on any or all levels of the essay crafting process, from initial brainstorming to final touches, to ensure that your final product represents you at your very best.

Psychology

I have a PhD in psychology. I have taught several psychology classes at the college level, have mentored many undergraduate psychology students, and have supervised many psychology research projects.
