Learn a system of drumming that encourages creativity and has limitless possibilities! All levels from beginner to advanced are welcome. Hard-working, dedicated students are preferred. I have been studying drums for 18 years, teaching privately for 7 years, and have had many teachers and methods that have inspired me along the way. I have studied with Gary Chaffee, Frank Katz, and Linda Malouf to name a few. I have also taken Summer workshops at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Gary's teachings have inspired me most of all because he doesn't just teach the drumming fundamentals-- his system incorporates these fundamentals into exercises while also encouraging creative applications to the drum set. In other words, he gives you a UNIVERSE of drumming and then it is up to you, the student, to carve your own path.
We will cover a variety of styles including rock, funk, jazz, hip-hop, Afro-Cuban, Latin, reggae, and more. We can go over technique exercises, grips, and philosophies, but I encourage the student to think of technique as a means to an end and not an end in itself. I believe that it is necessary for one to work hard in order to serve the music, rather than using the music to serve one's self. Not only will the music sound better, but other musicians will respect you more and you will get more work with this approach.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been playing drums for about 18 years and have played in several bands over that span of time. Currently, I perform in NYC with three bands: Ellis Ashbrook, The Gypsy West, and Aunt Ange. With Ellis Ashbrook, I have played at various venues all across the country, most notably NYC's Webster Hall and The Apollo Theater. I have been teaching private lessons on and off for about 7 years to students of various levels, but mostly to beginners.
Over the years, I have taken lessons with many people, including world-renowned instructor Gary Chaffee, with whom I studied for 4 years. With my playing and teaching experience, I feel that I can offer plenty of insight to beginners and intermediate level students looking to take their playing to the next level. My areas of expertise include drum set technique, rock/funk/jazz playing, musical notation, sight reading, music history, and musical philosophy.
