Having worked as a beginning piano, music composition, essay writing, and introductory psychology teacher for years, I've learned how to tailor my lessons to the unique needs of every student. My strengths include patience and understanding, qualities I've applied in teaching students ranging in age from 5 to adult. Another thing I think is important in teaching is to keep the student engaged.
I'm currently a PhD Music student at NYU, where I'm working on a written dissertation. I've done a lot scholarly research before, too, and have worked on a published paper. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Currently, I'm working on my PhD in Composition, and as such, have a Bachelor's and Master's in it. As a concert composer, I've had my music played at concerts and festivals throughout America and in Europe. I also write songs for my rock band. Since I'm experienced and trained in writing for both acoustic instruments and for electronic media, I can teach composing in both areas. In addition to helping you with the purely creative aspects of composing, I can teach techniques in: sequencing, editing, and mixing (Garageband, Logic, and Protools), orchestration, arranging, keyboard.
I have taken years of ear training classes while receiving my bachelors, masters, and completing coursework for a PhD in Music Composition. During my studies, I excelled at dictating tonal and non-tonal melodies, as well as harmonic and rhythmic dictation. I still practice training my ear through exercises I have learned in my studies, and those I have come up with on my own. This has practical applications for me as a composer and band member, since I use my ear all the time in creating new works, improvising, and coming up with parts that fit within a new song.
Sight Singing is a necessary complement to ear training. You know you can truly hear a melody if you can sing it back. As a composer gaining my musical education and practical experience, I learned how sight singing helps train the ear, and hence, helps one make music.
My approach to teaching sight singing involves, among other approaches, teaching short melodies from various styles, and shorter, more general exercises.
