About Andrew

Having worked as a beginning piano, music composition, essay writing, and introductory psychology teacher for years, I've learned how to tailor my lessons to the unique needs of every student. My strengths include patience and understanding, qualities I've applied in teaching students ranging in age from 5 to adult. Another thing I think is important in teaching is to keep the student engaged.

I'm currently a PhD Music student at NYU, where I'm working on a written dissertation. I've done a lot scholarly research before, too, and have worked on a published paper. As a composer, I've had my music played many place throughout America, and in Europe. I'm a proficient piano player, and I play keyboard in a band that's given shows around New York City.

I look forward to helping you furthering your learning!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

Currently, I'm working on my PhD in Composition, and as such, have a Bachelor's and Master's in it. As a concert composer, I've had my music played at concerts and festivals throughout America and in Europe. I also write songs for my rock band. Since I'm experienced and trained in writing for both acoustic instruments and for electronic media, I can teach composing in both areas. In addition to helping you with the purely creative aspects of composing, I can teach techniques in: sequencing, editing, and mixing (Garageband, Logic, and Protools), orchestration, arranging, keyboard.

Ear Training

I have taken years of ear training classes while receiving my bachelors, masters, and completing coursework for a PhD in Music Composition. During my studies, I excelled at dictating tonal and non-tonal melodies, as well as harmonic and rhythmic dictation. I still practice training my ear through exercises I have learned in my studies, and those I have come up with on my own. This has practical applications for me as a composer and band member, since I use my ear all the time in creating new works, improvising, and coming up with parts that fit within a new song.

My experience teaching ESL includes extensive vocabulary teaching, teaching grammatical constructions, reading comprehension, and helping prepare students for tests such as the TOEIC. I currently work for an online ESL tutoring platform for Japanese nationals. Additionally, I have edited essays for ESL college students.

General Music

Having studied music at the bachelors, masters, and PhD levels, I have a broad knowledge of music theory and music history. Additionally, I am knowledgeable in a large range of musical genres and historical eras. I could provide assistance to anyone needing help in a general music or music appreciation course, or anyone looking to widen their general musical knowledge.

I have tutored grammar to both children and adults, and both native and non-native English speakers. In tutoring Writing and ESL, the assistance I give frequently involves explaining grammatical concepts. Sometimes such concepts are complicated; I excel at being articulate and patient in explaining them.

Music History

Having completed coursework for three degrees in music, I have researched a great deal about music history. Of note, my masters thesis contained a music history component. My studies have ranged from writing an in-depth essay on the advances of 14th century French schools of composition, to personal study of contemporary electronic dance music genres to imitate for composition gigs. More generally, I have excelled in several music history classes and studied music history textbooks for graduate exams.

Music Theory

I have taught music theory students of all levels. This includes helping with topics ranging from basic note reading, to tonal harmony and counterpoint, to set theory. As a composer I have studied theory at the graduate level, and taught it to undergraduates. As a piano teacher, I'm comfortable incorporating theory lessons into learning the instrument.

I teach beginning and intermediate piano to all age groups; my experience includes teaching both young kids and adults. As a teacher, my aim is to make learning musical skills and playing technique fun and engaging. Since I'm a composer, I'm also happy to teach theory, improvisation, and composition at the piano.

My studies of the instrument include over a dozen years of lessons and preparation for numerous recitals. Currently, I'm applying my skills to playing keyboard in a band that has given shows in venues throughout New York.

Sight Singing

Sight Singing is a necessary complement to ear training. You know you can truly hear a melody if you can sing it back. As a composer gaining my musical education and practical experience, I learned how sight singing helps train the ear, and hence, helps one make music.

My approach to teaching sight singing involves, among other approaches, teaching short melodies from various styles, and shorter, more general exercises.

I have tutored writing for college, ESL, middle school, and high school children. In my view, writing is best learned through practice, so I typically focus on improving student's classroom writings first, before giving any targeted exercises. My specialty is helping students with their essays. I can meticulously correct papers in order to not only help students write an excellent essay, but also to identify what aspects of the student's writing needs work.

Having studied a humanities and a social science discipline at the bachelors and graduate level, I have a broad knowledge of basic academic writing. My own writings include an in-progress dissertation, a co-authored published psychology study, and a number of music theory research papers.
