About Susan

Hello all!

I'm an experienced 9th and 10th grade science teacher seeking to tutor students on the high school Living Environment Regents, Earth Science Regents, and middle school science exam. I am licensed to teach Earth Science and know my subject extremely well, but I also serve as our science team leader and co-plan with our Living Environment teachers so I am familiar with their curriculum and what it expects of students. I used to teach a general science course similar to what is expected of students in middle school in a high school where I worked previously.

I have been teaching in NYC public schools for 6 years, and during that time, I have worked with high achieving, struggling learners, students with low reading levels, and everything in between. My goal is to make science visual and hands on for my students. Over 30% of my current students have learning disabilities. During 2014-15, my Earth Science students showed the highest amount of growth out of all the students in the high school where I work and I was rated highly effective as a result of my student achievement results. More than 25% of my students last year had learning disabilities and they showed more growth in Regents Earth Science than on any of their other exams.

Additionally, I used to teach at a public transfer high school in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Almost 85% of my students passed the Earth Science Regents. I also taught a special education science class and almost 85% of that class passed the Science Regents Competency Test.

I got my master's at Brooklyn College in Teaching Earth Science four years ago and had a 3.9 GPA. I graduated summa cum laude with honors from The George Washington University six years ago with a 3.9 GPA in Anthropology and International Affairs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
