My name is Camilo and I want to help students of French and Spanish using fun and effective tutoring methods.
Currently a French teacher at NYU, I am a native speaker of Spanish and have lived for extended periods in Latin America. I have also lived and studied in France. I am deeply interested in language learning and favor a didactic style that brings this enthusiasm to my students. Having attended a typical high school, I am sensitive to the notion that language learning is all dry memorization. However, I believe the learning process can be facilitated and enlivened with drawings, humorous examples and fun exercises, along with traditional materials.
I have several years of experience tutoring Spanish with Wyzant in Portland, San Francisco and Brooklyn. This year, I am teaching French at NYU after a year in France teaching English. I worked for 2 years as a volunteer ESL teacher in the VOZ Worker's Rights Education Project in Portland, OR.
My tutoring style reflects the needs of the student. Once the goals of the student have been established (greater conversational fluency, grade improvement, proofreading, reading help, etc.), 1 or 2 sessions may be necessary to assess problem areas, and what kinds of material are needed. If the student has a basic text or grammar, I will use this as a starting point, but I almost always provide my own material or use my own textbooks.
I believe that for students of all ages, the biggest hurdle is engaging attention. As often as possible, I keep students working on examples and games, and reading exercises out loud. I also encourage finding linkages between coursework and the student's own experience in order to make lessons more interesting. Camilo is a very friendly and great tutor. He helped me with anything I had questions about. Grammar, translations, reading. I highly recommend him to anyone interested in learning or improving their Spanish.
Very patient with beginners (like me). Always conscientious about getting to lessons on time, and carefully answering questions from the student. Fully bilingual in Spanish and English (native in Spanish) which helps the excellent explanations and discussions. Highly recommended.
Camilo has been tutoring our 6-year old daughter, and he has been a very patient and engaging teacher. My daughter loves her lessons with Camilo, and Camilo has shown a real effort trying to understand what motivates my daughter and keeping her engaged.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
