Hi, I'm Jessica. I just graduated with an MFA from Rutgers University in Painting. I'm a studio artist and am looking for work as a tutor to supplement my income. At Rutgers, I had a teaching assistant fellowship, which allowed me to teach for 2 years at the Undergraduate Level, as well as pay for my graduate studies. I've taught beginning painting for 4 semesters and seeing the growth my students made over the semesters has been the most rewarding experience I've had in the past 2 years. In addition to beginning painting, I taught a figure drawing class as part of Rutgers University's Summer Session. My summer class had kids from 16 years old to adults up to 45, so I have experience with all ages. This class was very different too because I had people who were taking it for many different reasons. There were students who wanted to learn to draw as a hobby, and others who were trying to get a portfolio together for college applications, or fulfill specific degree requirements.
When I was applying to schools for my BFA, I was very fortunate to be accepted into a Portfolio Development class. This class was not only aimed to get the students enrolled accepted into college, the main goal was to get us scholarships. And it worked. I would take some of the same tactics and assignments that worked for me directly from my own experience in this particular class to individually help my own students develop and improve their portfolios to the point where they are able to be a strong, competitive applicant.
During my graduate studies, I was also invited to sit in on the Portfolio Review process for Graduate Admissions. This experience gave me a great understanding of what Colleges and Universities are looking for in terms of incoming students' portfolios.
As a tutor, I would use a lot of the same assignments and projects which worked well for me over the past two years teaching drawing and painting. Because we would be working individually, the assignments would become even specific to the individual I would be tutoring. I would alter projects to fit the needs of whomever I am working with, depending on their strengths and weaknesses.
I'm available for painting and drawing tutoring sessions during the week and on weekends.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have completed a total of 6 years of art school. My first four years were at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where I received a BFA in General Fine Arts. My time at MICA was really important, not only for my development as an artist, but I also gained a very specific set of drawing skills, and developed a very sensitive eye, which allows me to effectively express my ideas visually.
During my graduate education, I continued to improve my drawing skills in my own practice. In addition to this I was able to teach a Figure Drawing class which provided me with the necessary tools to help others improve their drawing abilities. During this class I realized how important individual attention is. Not everyone sees things in the same way, and I was able to work with students individually to find their own person strengths and styles and help them develop them individually, rather than have a class of students who all draw in the same style.
Painting is hard, but I identify myself as a painter, and I love everything about the medium. In addition to working as a painter in my own practice, I have taught 4 semesters of Beginning Painting at Rutgers University as part of their teaching Assistant Fellowship Program.
I have a comprehensive understanding of color theory, and have developed a syllabus for Painting 1 filled with assignments which have proven to me to be very effective in helping students gain a better understanding and feel for the medium. I also feel that my time as a student, participating in advanced group critiques, has provided me with the knowledge, vocabulary and experience needed for an advanced painting class or individual session.
