Universite De Liege (Belgium) (Chemistry, Physics)
Columbia University (Master's)
Tutoring has been my "hobby" ever since high school. I would tutor my classmates and friends. I went to college in Europe (Belgium) where I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry. I worked as a private tutor in Math and the Sciences to complement my scholarship. I eventually ended up in New york for my Masters. There I created private tutoring network. Many times callers were friends or relatives of students I tutored in the past.
My tutoring approach is as follows:
At the first encounter I ask specific questions that help understand areas of difficulty. I always give a summary of what we'll be doing and a review at the end of session. I strongly encourage students to ask questions as we go on, and not move on unless they understand the previous.
As stated above my tutoring experience has been built on the tracks of my academic pursuits. Today I still enjoy doing it on the tracks of my professional life given my occupation provides for a lot of flexibility.
A good tutor connects with the student on two levels: personal and intellectual. His personality should convey a message of help, not that of "control". He should set himself at the intellectual level of the student by using a language and methods that the student easily comprehends. That is what you will experience by yourself. He came over and reviewed a topic that my professor spent weeks doing in class in about two hours. There was no rush or feeling that we were going too fast he was just very thorough and made me understand the material very well!
Very good first meeting. Makunda, it seems might be a perfect fit for my son. He was prompt arriving about 15 minutes before the session. Once at my home, he got straight to the point. He wasted no time. I don't know if this was is his style or if he perceived that this style would work for my son but his style of teaching was firm and straight to the point. If I am paying for private tutoring, I want someone to get straight to the point with my son. Might be a perfect fit but only time will confirm this.
So far Mr. Makunda has been excellent for my daughter. He's been a good fit. I have witnessed improvement in my daughters work over the short time that he has worked with her. Mr. Makunda gets 5/5 stars from me, and high recommendations; for any parent looking for a tutor who is well rounded, knowledgeable about the subject matter, he's the one.
Makunda has been the chemistry tutor of my daughter for the past year. I can't say how a great tutor he is. May daughter is doing the International Baccalaureate, which is a high level college course and Makunda has been able to help her in Chemistry. Her grades have increased and she is a more confident student. Makunda is patient, available and know how to teach. We highly recommend him.
Makunda is the best tutor I've ever had! He explains complex ideas clearly, he is very patient and professional. I would never have passed precalculus without him!
Makunda was very punctual. His knowledge of the subject (chemistry) was very impressive. He was able to explain it to my daughter in great details. She gave him two thumbs up for her first lesson with him.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
We communicate test taking strategies within the vast array of chemistry: fundamental atomic theory, acids and bases, stoechiometry, redox, thermochemistry, calorimetry, nuclear chemistry, organic chemistry,...
I currently tutor the physics portion of the MCAT, which revolves around major concepts such as motion in two dimensions, circular motion, forces, work, energy, fluids, thermodynamics, springs, waves, sounds, electricity, magnetism, mirrors, lenses, and relativity.
