About Makunda

Tutoring has been my "hobby" ever since high school. I would tutor my classmates and friends. I went to college in Europe (Belgium) where I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry. I worked as a private tutor in Math and the Sciences to complement my scholarship. I eventually ended up in New york for my Masters. There I created private tutoring network. Many times callers were friends or relatives of students I tutored in the past.
My tutoring approach is as follows:
At the first encounter I ask specific questions that help understand areas of difficulty. I always give a summary of what we'll be doing and a review at the end of session. I strongly encourage students to ask questions as we go on, and not move on unless they understand the previous.

As stated above my tutoring experience has been built on the tracks of my academic pursuits. Today I still enjoy doing it on the tracks of my professional life given my occupation provides for a lot of flexibility.

A good tutor connects with the student on two levels: personal and intellectual. His personality should convey a message of help, not that of "control". He should set himself at the intellectual level of the student by using a language and methods that the student easily comprehends. That is what you will experience by yourself.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Basic operations are key to math understanding. With innovative methods, I help you understand your own way. Next in importance after basic operations is the ability to factor expressions and solve equations, specially if they involve fractions. To top it all I will help you avoid mistakes involving sign assignments (+, -).

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is the road to calculus. It is very close to Pre-Calculus.I teach how to organize ideas and the multiple formulas that this course requires. Expressions and equations are more elaborate than in Algebra1. There is a healthy mix with Geometry and Trigonometry. In order to help you not to be discouraged by the abundance of materials, I help you grasp key concepts and shortcuts without heavy memorizing.

Calculus

If needed, a quick review of key concepts of Algebra 2 will help. You will learn how to navigate all the symbols and formulas and remember them for a long time.

Chemistry

We communicate test taking strategies within the vast array of chemistry: fundamental atomic theory, acids and bases, stoechiometry, redox, thermochemistry, calorimetry, nuclear chemistry, organic chemistry,...

French

As tough as French grammar seems to be, I will make it easy for you to understand. I will help with accent improvement.

Geometry

We will navigate through all the shapes and formulas in a way that will help you remember them for a long time.

GMAT

I teach the Math part of the GMAT. I will help you organize formulas and strategies.

GRE

The Math part of the GRE involves the same basics of Algebra and Geometry that the SAT deals with. However problems are presented in more challenging ways. We help with test taking strategies.

Macroeconomics

I teach how to master the mathematical aspects of Economics. I will help you understand with a new angle, key concepts in Macro and Micro Economics.

MCAT

I currently tutor the physics portion of the MCAT, which revolves around major concepts such as motion in two dimensions, circular motion, forces, work, energy, fluids, thermodynamics, springs, waves, sounds, electricity, magnetism, mirrors, lenses, and relativity.

Microeconomics

I teach how to master the mathematical aspects of Economics. I will help you understand with a new angle, key concepts in Macro and Micro Economics.

Physics

We help with strategies helping to solve problems: Kinematics(one and two dimensions), forces, energy, thermodynamics, waves, electricity, magnetism, quantum physics,...

Prealgebra

This is the class that enables you to flourish in Math for the rest of your life. I will be glad to help you build that foundation.

Precalculus

Precalculus is the twin sister for Algebra2, with a few twists. I will help you understand it, using the very foundation of Algebra.

Regents

For over 10 years I have helped students pass their Regents. The subject tests are listed below. I cover Regents for the whole high school range. I will help you time efficiently your responses.

PHYSICS
Straight line motion, Forces and motion, Momentum, Gravity, Friction, Energy and Work, Static electricity, Magnetism, Waves, Modern Physics (Atomic model, Spectroscopy...)

CHEMISTRY
Atomic concepts, Periodic table, Moles-Stoichiometry, Chemical bonding, Physical behavior of matter, Kinetics-equilibrium, Organic chemistry, Oxidation-reduction, Acids-Bases-Salts, Nuclear chemistry...

ALGEBRA 1 & 2/TRIGONOMETRY/ GEOMETRY
Operations, Operations and inequalities, Variables and expressions, Patterns, Functions, Relations, Coordinate geometry, Trigonometric functions, Measurement, Statistics and probability...

SAT Math

SAT Math involves basic knowledge of Algebra, Geometry, and word problem solving. The key to success is test taking strategies, accuracy with speed. We help with time saving methods.

Trigonometry

I will help use the foundation of geometry in order to glean the best out of this course. You will learn how to organize ideas and formulas.
