About Elizabeth

Hi!

I am currently a 4th-grade public school teacher in Park Slope, Brooklyn. This is my 4th year at this school and my 6th year of teaching. I have experience tutoring students in all of the elementary grades. Not only am I certified in Childhood Education, but I also have certification in Special Education which allows me to teach students who are gifted as well as those who need extra support. I'm a firm believer in making learning fun, tapping into past experiences to connect to the present task, and using multi-sensory activities to address any learning needs.

Please feel free to contact me so I can further explain my methods and teaching philosophy! I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

Prior to receiving my Masters Degree in Special Education, I worked as a camp counselor for students with disabilities. This work prompted me to obtain an advanced degree in Special Education. Since graduating, I have worked as a lead teacher in a self-contained classroom where I developed lessons for students with emotional disabilities, ADHD, Autism, and severe learning disabilities. After two years in a self-contained classroom, I moved to an inclusion classroom where I currently teach students with learning disabilities, speech and language disabilities, other health impairments, and students on the autism spectrum. Further, I am certified in the Wilson Reading Intervention Program.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Prior to receiving my Masters Degree in Special Education, I worked as a camp counselor for students with Autism. This work prompted me to obtain an advanced degree in Special Education. Since graduating, I have worked as a lead teacher in a self-contained classroom where I developed lessons for students on the Autism Spectrum. After two years in a self-contained classroom, I moved to an inclusion classroom where I currently teach students with learning disabilities, speech and language disabilities, other health impairments, and students on the autism spectrum.

Common Core

I have been teaching 4th grade in a NYC public school as a special education teacher for the last 6 years. I was and still am an active participant in ensuring my school's adherence to the common core standards. Over the last few years, my lessons have addressed these new standards across subject areas.

Dyslexia

I am a certified Special Education teacher who also is trained in the Wilson Reading Intervention Program, an approved phonics instruction program for students with dyslexia. I have taught many students with learning disabilities, including dyslexia. Using a multi-sensory approach to phonics, I utilize a variety of modalities to help students recognize word patterns. This allows students to increase sight word recognition and improve spelling.

Elementary (K-6th)

After graduating with my bachelors degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University, I attended NYU to earn a degree in Childhood Special Education. During these years in school, I worked in classrooms as a student teacher, eventually taking over the classroom as a lead teacher. Once I had completed my master's degree in Childhood Special Education, I worked as a 4th grade classroom teacher at a school for students with severe emotional and behavioral disabilities. After two years of teaching 4th grade and a 2nd, 3rd, 4th grade split classroom at the self-contained school, I moved to a community elementary school in Brooklyn to teach 4th grade in an ICT classroom and am entering my 3rd year at this school (5th year of teaching)!

Phonics

I teach word study by using multi-sensory activities that address patterns and rules in the English language. I am certified in the Wilson Reading Intervention Program and have familiarity with Words Their Way

Special Needs

I am a New York State certified Special Education teacher. For two years, I taught students with emotional and behavioral disorders who also had severe learning disabilities. Currently, I am the Special Education teacher in an ICT class at a New York City public school. I write IEPs and develop modifications for students with disabilities to gain access to the grade appropriate standards.
