Hello. I am an experienced mathematics and science teacher, with a wide range of interests and an extensive understanding of physics and mathematics. I love to talk with students of all ages about these subjects, and I would like to help you to appreciate their fundamental simplicity and beauty while getting you to your academic goals. I hold a PhD in physics from Columbia University, and I have been part of the condensed matter research community for more than a decade. I prefer to tutor near where I live in Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY. I am willing to travel anywhere reasonable public transportation will take me, but beware that I will charge extra for long distances requiring more than 45 minutes' travel. Please note that unless you have already submitted a credit card number to Wyzant, I will not be able to see your phone number or email address in your initial message, and the Wyzant system will be our only available mode of contact. Thank you for your consideration.

I bill a minimum of one hour per appointment. Beyond the first hour, I bill in five minute increments.
I don't think my son has ever asked Ben a question he couldn't answer, and he's preparing for the SAT as well as taking AP Chemistry and Algebra 2/Trig. He even helped my older son in Calculus and Computer Science when he was home from college on break.
The class I received tutoring for was a graduate level statistics course (hypothesis tests, confidence intervals, etc). I sought tutoring because I failed an assignment in my class and panicked with a midterm coming up. At the time, I wasn't understanding the concepts in class behind all of the complex formulas, or which to use when, etc. Benjamin helped explain all of the relevant concepts in a way that made sense in the week leading up to the midterm, and I ended up with a perfect score!
Benjamin is an excellent tutor and really seemed to explain things to my daughter in a way she could understand. She even told me that if her teacher had explained things to her as Benjamin did, that she would have done much better in class. The first session seemed to go well, and I'm relieved to have found a tutor that my daughter responds to, so she can get the help she needs for her Algebra2/Trigonometry class.
Benjamin is an excellent tutor. My daughter has improved her grades and has mastered the concepts well. He is knowledgeable, professional, and responsive. We couldn't ask for a better tutor.
Benjamin like a great tutor but after some thought of our session together, I concluded that Benjamin is not the right fit for me.
I'm sorry that I could not give you the immediate result that you wanted. Best of luck.
I only have 3 minutes to write this - so I will keep it short - Ben is terrific. He is patient and great at working with kids who have learning issues - like my daughter (ADD). Thanks Ben!
Very adept in understanding and communicating mathematics. He is an excellent and brilliant tutor. I am privileged to be learning from him and would definitely recommend that you call him if you need help in Pre-Calculus.
Benjamin takes a great approach to tutoring giving the student the "big picture" and then drilling down into the details. He stops regularly to ask his student key questions that help illuminate what the student is grasping and what the student needs help with. He is an educator extraordinaire. I have every confidence that he will help my son pass his regents with flying colors.
Ben was instrumental in my daughter's success in math and science this year. As a junior in one of NYC's selective high schools, she struggled with the extremely demanding course work and exams in both Physics and Pre-calculus. Ben provided excellent tutoring support that helped kept her on top of these subjects in a very demanding academic atmosphere. In addition to being a great teacher, Ben was very flexible in scheduling tutoring sessions and went out of his way several times to make himself available to assist my daughter in preparing for tests. She achieved success in both math and science this year and Ben's efforts were an important factor in that success.
Ben sat with me for a number of weeks of meetings patiently explaining all the various topics of calculus to me. Often repeating topics with new and various applications or explanations, with a definite focus on the trouble spots that I never mentioned but he knew were there. Truly I have a much deeper understanding of calculus and its applications, mostly from watching examples worked out in front of me without hesitation. I can't recommend Ben highly enough as a tutor. If you have a desire to truly learn the subjects that's he's fluent in then look no further.
My son's class average went up 10 points and he got a perfect score on the final! This tutor elicited interest in the subject and clearly conveyed strategies and concepts.
Ben is an excellent teacher. He is flexible with his time, and is willing to review and teach any aspect of physics. He is extremely knowledgeable in Physics and Precalc, the two areas where he has been of most help for my son. He is good at teaching Physics because he has taught college physics. He has helped my son read the text, do problems, work on labs and generally obtain a better understanding of physics.I recommend him without reservation.
He has an excellent knowledge on statistic. He explains everything clearly , and i can do my statistic with confidence and " closed my eyes". I wish that he is my professor on my class. I want he to tutor again..
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra 1 is a textbook title or the name of a course, but it is not a subject. It is often the course where students become acquainted with symbolic manipulations of quantities. While it can be confusing at first (eg "how can a letter be a number?"), it can also broaden your intellectual scope. It's a step out of the morass of arithmetic into a more obviously structured way of thinking.
Physics is different things to different people. As a body of knowledge, it's the collection of experimentally verifiable ideas about how the objective world works. As a course, it can be stimulating, but also frustratingly elusive. I can help you savor your learning experience--and, if you are just trying to get through it alive, I can also help you to pass your tests.
