Hi, I’m Alyssa! I’m currently an Undergraduate student at CUNY Hunter College. I’m majoring in English and Secondary Education (Grades 7-12). As I moved through my academic career, I realized that reading and writing were strong passions of mine. I also realized that moving and transitioning through all the different texts from high school to college was incredibly difficult and hard to navigate. As a tutor, I want to be as helpful as possible to making navigating difficult texts and assignments easier to navigate for students.

I’ve been tutoring since I was 13. I tutored through the Junior National Honor Society in my middle school, I spent my free time tutoring my friends who were struggling in high school by teaching them how to effectively proofread and revise their essays. I also have a semester long experience as a Teaching Assistant to an 11/12th Grade Literature Class. As an English/Education major, I’m constantly practicing the skills I’m learning to be a classroom teacher by applying them to tutoring sessions.

I want students to know that seeking help for challenging work is okay, and I’m here to be as helpful as possible. That being said any and all resource suggestions from students and parents are welcomed with open minds! I’m typically easy to reach & respond quickly. My availability changes frequently, but I'm always as flexible as possible to your schedule. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions, or to schedule a lesson!

I've been working with children in grades K-6 for about 5+ years now in different settings. These settings range from summer camp programs, to after school programs to private tutoring in a variety of topics. Primarily, I tutor in Reading/Writing skills, but I am knowledgable and able to help with some mathematics. I've also been assisting students of this age group with navigating this new remote learning setting trying to figure out how they learn best given the new circumstances.

In my senior year of high school, I assisted an 11/12th grade literature class as a Teacher’s Assistant. In this position, I was given the opportunity to occasionally teach the class the designated lesson for the day. I’ve also been studying strategies for teaching reading to struggling readers since 2018 and am equipped with the necessary skill to help struggling readers I come in contact with try to understand why the struggle with reading & figure out strategies that help them. This is the career path I’m pursuing, so this would be both an opportunity to practice my skills and help your student.

I’ve been a Teacher’s Assistant for an 11/12th grade literature class (2 semesters in a row). I’ve observed literature classes for 9th, 10th & 12th grade which provided me different outlooks for different methods of teaching literature. I’m an Undergraduate student in an English preparation for teaching secondary education (grades 7-12 English), allowing me access to courses that delve into teaching both classics and more modern day literature.

I’ve written poetry, short stories, small plays, etc. I’m also well versed in academic writing of English Literature essays ranging from essays on thematic topics to comparative literature essays and more. As a teacher candidate, I have access to plenty of educational resources to help explain and break down the writing process for students to easier navigate.
