About Meghan A.

Bio

I am a neuroscientist, writer, entrepreneur, and data scientist with a passion for teaching. I do not believe there are “math people” and “science people,” but that traditional pedagogies alienate large portions of the population from the disciplines. My teaching challenges that notion. I do not expect my students to go into a stem field, but rather believe that math and science are essential for understanding our modern world, and being responsible citizens in it. I draw from a lot of these sources to make the subject matter engaging and relevant to the student.

Completed a doctoral thesis that used a lot of high-level statistics to parse natural, unmediated behavior of animals. Also participated in the post-doctoral Insight Fellowship for Data Science.

I am a neuroscientist who has drawn upon these fields for her doctoral research. I have taught college level human physiology (lecture and lab), and developed curriculum for high school level biology courses to discuss modern topics in genetics.

I have programming experience in python, R, and Matlab. I recently did a postdoctoral fellowship at Insight where I used supervised machine learning to create a web app allowing victims of sexual violence to assess the risk of their situation.

If you think we could be a good fit, don’t hesitate to reach out. I am eager to help students stay on track during this trying time.

More and more we are learning about the importance of our commensal bacteria on all aspects of our health, including our nervous system. I have studied the gut-brain axis, the enteric nervous system and its role in the early development of Parkinson's Disease. Microbiology is also widely used in the lab for cloning and genetic manipulation (e.g. CRISPR).
