Bio

I am an educator who is known for my love of children. The joy I feel in watching them master a topic they once struggled with is why I love being an educator. I believe every child has the ability to soar, some just need a little help in opening their wings. I have always said, there are many things in life that I'm not sure of, but there are two things that I know for sure. I was meant to have the son that I was blessed with, and I was born to educate children.

On a personal note, I would like to share a little bit about my past. I was a special education teacher with the New York City Department of Education for over fifteen years. I planned on continuing my career until retirement, but my life took an unexpected turn. I was forced to take an indefinite leave of absence due to a car accident. I was unable to return to the classroom, but desperately wanted to continue teaching. The leave eventually brought me to Wyzant, and every day I am grateful that it did.

There has been a void in my life that I am now able and ready to fill. I am currently an Independent SETS Provider for the NYCDOE, as well as a private tutor. As a classroom teacher, so much time is spent on mandatory paperwork that sometimes the actual teaching suffers. As a one-to-one educator, this isn't the case. The ratio of one student, one teacher, brings about amazing results.

During my time as a classroom teacher with the NYCDOE, I taught ELA including literature and grammar. I also taught math, science and social studies to my middle school students. Many were working 2-4 years below grade level. With my strategies, they not only began to love learning, but their reading/subject levels increased 2-3 grades in one academic school year. I was known to raise standardized test scores each year. I currently hold a Master's Degree in General and Special Education, and I still possess a current license as a New York City Department of Education teacher.

Hello, I am qualified to tutor in this area because as a special education teacher, I am certified to teach all four major content areas (ELA, science, social studies and mathematics). In order to become certified in my current certification, I passed the NYS teacher's exam, which for special needs, incorporated all four major content areas. My students, although middle school level, worked on a second to sixth grade level. Daily I was responsible to teach all levels in my classroom with the average levels from second to fourth grade. I increased reading, writing and comprehension in all content areas by a minimum of two grade levels each academic school year.
Handwriting,

Handwriting

As a previous Special Education classroom teacher, I witnessed many of my students struggle with clear and legible handwriting. I decided to implement handwriting strategies which I feel have been lost along the way in the public school system. Teaching students where on the line to begin a letter, using fun and effective reminders such as "touch and "bump" (touching the line to begin a letter and bumping it to stop), air writing a letter to get the student used to the flow and direction of a particular letter being taught. These are just a few of the effective strategies I have used to greatly improve a child's handwriting.
Phonics,

Phonics

As a long time Special Education educator in the NYC public school system, I have taught phonics to beginning elementary students as well as struggling middle school students. I have used games, riddles, videos, very specific reading passages which were concentrated on specific sounds, and of course, good old fashion practice to help students master their phonics.

Study Skills,

Study Skills

As a special education teacher who holds a Masters in both General and Special Education, teaching study skills was an absolute must. I dedicated at least two periods per week in my classroom, to teach my students appropriate and productive study skills. These skills included, but were not limited to, making and using their own flash cards, visual reminders on the walls around their bedroom/house and creating an environment that is conducive to effective studying.

Knowledgeable, patient, and absolutely amazing!

I was very nervous about my 10 year old who does not have a love for reading or math or anything that has to do with studying or adding on something that is close to “school”. I had many conversations with Ms. Tabitha about my daughter and her learning challenges. Through every conversation I felt ease and a sense of peace in entrusting Ms. Tabitha with helping my daughter to reach a goal that she believes she can achieve. There were moments through tutoring when I for sure thought man this may be our last session. She's not focusing, she's creating excuses, and is just not into. My child whom which just discovered has ADHD. Ended her session with a smile. Ms. Tabitha was by far the BEST in working with my child. She enjoyed the way Ms. Tabitha taught, her approach, not giving up and for holding her accountable for her own education. My child is actually excited about her next session. And stated to me, “Man, if she was my only teacher I might actually like reading and math and going to school.” Thank you. Tabitha, in just a short time you have actually made a major impact in my daughter's life. Donna K.

Patient and Kind

Ms. Tabitha helped me read more fluently, Ms. Tabitha helped me make complete sentences better than I used to. Ms. Tabitha was very nice, and positive. I still need to work more on completing my sentences. Ms. Tabitha did a great job on teaching me how to improve my reading and my complete sentences.
