About Suzzette

Hello there! My name is Suzzette, and I am a Math Coach. I am a non-traditional student currently enrolled at the City College of New York in the Pure Mathematics program. My expected graduation is May 2017. I believe in empowering students in order to get them to achieve their goals.

Let me ask you something: What comes to mind when you think of math? Do you think of your previous experiences and get anxious? Angry? Annoyed? Overwhelmed? Do you think, "I could never learn how to do math?" Do you vaguely recall some of it, but need to brush up on it for a test? Do you get fascinated and want to learn more? Are you studying math as cross training for an allied discipline, or for better logical reasoning skills? That's where Coach Suzzette comes in. I can coach you on your math studies, if they include

Arithmetic
Pre-Algebra
Algebra
Geometry
Trigonometry
Pre-Calculus
Regents, ACT, SAT, ASVAB, or GED/TASC Test Prep
Statistics
Calculus
Probability
Combinatorics
Logic
Number Theory
Abstract Algebra

Why am I a "coach" and not a "tutor?" Well, what does a coach do? Let's take a basketball coach, for example. He/She is someone who has played basketball before. They encourage you to exercise by having you train in several key areas, such as in the game itself and its related fitness. They may demonstrate a few lay-ups or jump shots for you, but you're expected to do 1,000+ of them yourself after that, right? Is the coach the one in the game, playing offense and defense? No. The coach is on the sidelines, encouraging you, and reminding you of what you need to do to win. They are there to keep you focused. Well that's me, but with math (I'd be willing to coach you in basketball actually, but that's extra). I will not do your homework for you, I will not take the test for you, but I will train you to do these things yourself. I will show you all the tips and tricks I know, and I will empower you along the way. I am here to teach you to fish, not to give you the fish.

On the other hand, what does a tutor do? An overwhelming majority of the tutors I've met will actually do your homework for you. Some students are paying these tutors with the expectation that they will do the work for the students, and that somehow the students will learn the material that way. This is a common occurrence, and I've seen too many students fail to grasp the concepts through this method. I've watched and listened to tutors talk the entire time without giving students a chance to even breathe, never mind to ask questions, and then they expect that you have understood everything they said because you sat there silently semi-following along! That's not me. I'm not there with you as some sort of lecturer to a silent audience. I expect you to stop me as soon as you don't know what's going on. The learning process is different for everyone, and it takes as long as it takes. A tutor talking for two hours straight is not going to speed that up, but a good coach can arm you with the real tools you need to succeed in math, the most important being comprehension.

I have hundreds of hours of experience coaching students in math, and I have spent many years on my own self-development and strategies of empowerment. There is much to be learned and shared from my experiences, and that's why I'm here: to empower students through math, and to empower others through self-development. I am here to help, so allow me to help you!

Feel free to contact me with any questions or to book a session now!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Finite Math

Finite math is a lower-level math class that covers a range of topics, not including calculus. Some things that tend to be covered are logic, set theory, probability theory, matrices, and statistics. I have taken courses in each of these topics. In addition, I have coached students in all of these areas, so overall I am well-qualified to help students with finite math.

Suzzette is an extremely delightful person. She arrived on time prepared to work. In the one hour session, Suzzette identified several weakness and strengths through a Common Core assessment. She continued on to develop those weakness through the use of money manipulative and visual prompts. My son likes her and I will be hiring Suzzette for weekly sessions. We look forward in seeing Suzzette ag
