About Stephen

What has made me so successful throughout my 10+ teaching career is that I try to deconstruct challenging academics into their simplest form, then build upwards from there. This makes it easier for students to digest, and quickly established a referential foundation. Many times, students struggle because they deem the content dull, disengaging, verbose, confusing or otherwise intimidating. I have an excellent track record of helping to undermine such struggles by helping students better comprehend and embrace the fundamentals of what needs to be learned. Because I was once a disengaged student myself, I have focused on making education as accessible as possible.

I am a charismatic personality, always energetic and incorporate creative approaches to teaching. I constantly evaluate what works and what doesn't, then adjust accordingly. My success as an English teacher has allowed for my progression to lead teacher, then curriculum developer and subsequently department head. I have worked nationally and internationally, with students of all types and motivations. I've also worked with ESL, TOEFL, IELTS students, as well as those with IEPs.

ENGLISH
I've taught English for 10 years, both domestically and internationally, and much of my success is a result of taking individualized, but proven, approaches to problem solving. I have a BA in English and Creative Writing with a minor in Media Studies. I have an MS in English Education, as well as Certification within NYS, BC and the International Baccalaureate program. Before teaching, I worked as a copy writer for a NYC public relations firm.

WRITING
Beyond my teaching qualifications, and my experience as a professional copywriter, I've also authored various articles for journals in education (as well as Diet, Exercise and Health) and have published fiction and poetry in various literary magazines. I've also worked with stand up comedians to structure their jokes to improve audience response.

ESL/IELTS/TOEFL
I trained nearly five hundred Chinese students for IELTS and TOEFL over the course of two years, with the purpose of preparing them for entrance into western universities. Under my guidance, the school-wide passing statistics for first time test-takers increased from 42% to 94%. I worked closely with many ESL students who were placed into general education classes, relying upon differentiation and reading intervention to help them progress.

PUBLIC SPEAKING/SPEECH WRITING
As an academic leader, I've needed to speak as the face of an entire school; I am excellent at infusing delivery, structural and rhetorical techniques in order to master writing and delivering a compelling speech.

I'm happy to answer any questions you may have, and encourage anyone interested to contact me to discuss your personal goals, and what best approaches should be taken to accomplish them.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have over a decade of teaching experience, in both national and international contexts. Because I rely upon simplification and practice over lecturing, I have had tremendous success with my students, in literature, creative writing, public speaking and ESL capacities. As a result, I son became the lead English teacher at my school, which allowed me to help guide other teachers in this style. I eventually became the chair of the department, and lead curriculum developer for all Humanities courses. Additionally, I have had creative works and educational articles published, and prior to teaching I was a copywriter for a PR firm in NY. Thus, I have a lot of experience in both teaching English skills, and applying them successfully.

Literature

I have a BA in English, and an MS in English education. I'm also a published author. I scored around a 700 on SAT English. Much of my experience as an educator has focused on developing literature curricula.

Public Speaking

I have a BA in English, and an MS in English education. I'm also a published author.I have been a member of Toastmasters (a public speaking organization), I've needed to deliver speeches and manage meetings in front of crowds of hundreds, and I am a student of rhetoric and debate.

Writing

I have 11 years of English teaching, much of which is focused in writing; my undergraduate degree specialized in writing, my graduate degree is focused in teaching the writing structure, and I worked as a copywriter before teaching. There are also many articles in education journals I've published.
