About Matt

Hi. Thanks for checking out my profile. I have honors Bachelor's degrees in history and art history from Johns Hopkins University and a Master's of food science from Heriot-Watt University (Scotland). I was drawn to tutoring because simply love explaining concepts to people. I am also lucky enough to know first hand how large an impact a teacher or tutor can have.

In addition to having done formal coursework in mathematics, I spent three years as a data monkey for investment banks, so algebraic equations and Excel were pretty central to my life for a while. In my current role as a technical consultant for the distilling industry, I use algebra to perform a myriad of calculations for clients. When explaining mathematical concepts to students, I like to use real-world examples to help make them relevant, and often draw on my knowledge of food science (there is a lot more math than most people realize), sports and finance to due so.

A strong knowledge of biology is crucial to success as a food scientist. I have a firm understanding of human and animal anatomy, particularly digestion. As my professional and academic specialty is fermented beverage production (e.g. brewing and distilling), I have an expertise on the biology of the plants and microbes commonly used in the industry.

I am happy to travel within much of New York City and have a very flexible schedule, but please note that I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. I take great pride in the work I do and realize that the choice of tutor is something that should be taken lightly. I am more that happy to discuss individual needs and curriculum prior to the first lesson to ensure a good fit.

I look forward to meeting you,

Matt

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

In addition to having done formal coursework in mathematics, I spent three years performing data related tasks for investment banks, so algebraic equations and Excel were pretty central to my life for a while.

Algebra 2

I have performed formal coursework in mathematics, and I spent three years performing data related tasks for investment banks, so algebraic equations and Excel were pretty central to my life for a while. In my current role as a technical consultant for the distilling industry, I use algebra to perform a myriad of calculations for clients. When explaining mathematical concepts to students, I like to use real-world examples to help make them relevant.

American History

I have an honors BA in History from Johns Hopkins University, and I also studied the subject for a year in Ireland at University College Cork. My thesis was on the role of the Irish diaspora in the Civil War. When tutoring the subject, I employ amusing anecdotes to create a narrative and engage my students. For higher level students, I focus on how to conduct historical research. This entails finding and evaluating sources, using them in an effective fashion, and writing a well-structured paper.

Art History

I have an honors BA in Art History from Johns Hopkins University, and I also studied the subject for a year in Ireland at University College Cork. I specialize in the Italian Renaissance and insular manuscripts. My thesis was on evidence of direct Coptic influence in the Book of Kells. When tutoring in the subject I place a very strong emphasis on formal analysis and historical context.

Biology

I have a Master's of food science from Heriot-Watt University in Scotland. I am also employed as a production consultant in the brewing and distilling industry as a specialist in fermentation and enzymatic activity. I have a firm understanding of human and animal anatomy, particularly digestion as it relates to digestion and nutrition. As my professional and academic specialty is fermented beverage production (e.g. brewing and distilling), I have an expertise on the biology of the plants and microbes commonly used in the industry.

European History

I have an honors BA in History from Johns Hopkins University, with a focus on European History, which I also studied for a year in Ireland at University College Cork. When tutoring the subject, I employ amusing anecdotes to create a narrative and engage my students. For higher level students, I focus on how to conduct historical research. This entails finding and evaluating sources, using them in an effective fashion, and writing a well-structured paper.
