About Julio

My approach, whether it is teaching languages (Spanish, Japanese or ESL) or physical skills (physical fitness, martial arts, taichi) is to teach core concepts and their real world applications in a fun way. Students will get a thorough understanding that will not only get them good grades and test scores, but also deep knowledge that will help them retain the subject matter for a long time.

In terms of subject knowledge, I taught ESL, TOEFL and TOEIC in Japan and the US for 10 years; I taught conversational Japanese and Spanish for 20 years; and, as a certified martial arts teacher, have been teaching martial arts and physical fitness for over 20 years.

With these many years, working with students of varying ages, I can adapt my approach to make sure that the student's learning style and goals are taken into account. This experience also helps me with teaching students how to prepare for tests, as I can help them master subject knowledge as well as the mind/ body aspects that affect test taking, so that students can prevail without having too much unnecessary stress.

With this step by step approach, my students will get their desired result and enjoy the process. Who says study has to be a grind? Not anymore.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

A teacher of ESL/TESL for over 10 years, I specialized in helping students understand English both for testing and real life communication. I worked both in the school system as well as in institutes dedicated to helping students improve their speaking, negotiation and test taking skills (TOEFL, TOEIC). Since I was a linguistics major as an undergrad before completing my education at UCLA, my approach is grammar-based with a focus on functional learning and quick acquisition. I specialize in helping students prepare for tests and increasing their confidence, competence, precision, and overall business/work proficiency. This is especially true for business/academic writing and speaking.

A competitive gymnast and martial artist, I have over 30 years experience in numerous fitness disciplines, with a focus on functional exercises that use little equipment and one's own body weight. In addition to the exercise and body awareness, I am certified as a health coach by the institute of integrative nutrition, so that I can add proper nutrition to any fitness regimen.

I teach clients how to get stronger, more agile and flexible, while increasing their stamina, in simple and effective ways. This means clients can achieve their optimum weight and build the body they desire without hours in a gym. In many cases the goals can be achieve in as little as 30min a few times a week.

Most of the training will be done in parks, yards or in some public environment to make it easy, accessible and repeatable. So, If you want to be fit with a powerful fitness program that works with your lifestyle, check me out.

After studying Japanese language and culture at UCLA and University of California at Berkeley, I moved to Japan where I lived and worked for 11 years. There I worked in Japanese companies, using both spoken and written language. After coming back to NYC, I worked in Japanese companies where I read, wrote, spoke and translated Japanese, so I am quite proficient in not only academic but also practical business Japanese.

Because of this, I can help students practically and successfully navigate their way through this complex and fascinating world.

My specialty is getting students ready to travel, work and live in Japan. What we will cover is not only speaking but proper grammar and speaking so that the student will be able to freely and effectively communicate to native Japanese.

Although I have mostly helped students who want to learn Japanese for practical reasons, I want it to be clear that I also help those who love Manga, Anime, Karaoke, Budo (Aikido, Karate, Kendo, Jiujutsu, etc.) and J-pop enjoy these arts and understand them better. So, one does not need to be a serious student to benefit from working with me.

My passion is to help my students become more proficient and knowledgeable in this amazing language and culture. By working with me, you will not only gain access to this new world, you will also be able function in it faster in with more ease.

Martial Arts

I have over 30 years experience learning and over 20 years teaching martial arts.

Arts I have studied are:
Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Kali/Escrima/Arnis, Penjak Silat, Wing Chun, Jeet Kun Do, Muy Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, Martial Taichi, Xing-Yi, Bagua, Systema and Combat Hapkido.

I have a number of lineages, though as one goes on with training that does not matter as much. To help students decide, here are some of the main ones to reference: American Tae Kwon Do (Joe Trinidad), JKD Unlimited (Burton Richardson), Cheng-Ming Kung Fu (Hidemine Jibiki and Wang Fu-lai done through the All Japan Soft Style Martial Arts Federation), Pekiti Tirsia Kali Association (kit Acenas), Systema (Andy Cefai, Edgars Cakuls, Martin Wheeler, Vladimir Vasiliev and Mikhai Ryabko), Combat Hapkido (Robert Clancy).

My approach is direct and practical. It combines sensitivity, strength, agility and stamina with forms and concepts to build up a person's ability to grow as a person as they learn to defend themselves. Depending on what track a person takes, the learning can be more combative or character-building, as I adapt my training methods to the goals of the student(s) I am working with. Whatever I teach, however, is safe, time-tested and will help students prevail in difficult situations.

So, if you want real self-defense that is practical, effective and affordable, please consider meeting me for a trial session. You will be glad you did.

A native Spanish speaker, I took advanced Spanish language and literature courses while studying Linguistics at UCLA. As a student, I tutored American and Japanese students who wanted to learn Spanish, and have since done this for my private students both in Japan and here. I have over 20 years experience and will help you speak like a native.

20 years ago I began teaching TOEFL prep classes to my Japanese students who were preparing to study abroad in the US. I did this for various institutes and privately. This was in addition to test prep for TOEIC, which was more popular for business people and for those living in Asia.

Since I moved back to the US, I have also taught this important preparation to students trying to get into such schools as UCLA, Columbia, Hunter College, LIU and others. I have also done this for schools like Zoni and independently. Here I worked with students from many different countries, such as China, Japan, the Philippines, Russia (Former Soviet Union), Poland, Taiwan, India, and Latin America (Mexico, Columbia, etc.).

So, if one needs a tutor who is experienced in the subject, is good at test prep and can help students of different nationalities, I am your man.
