Recently I moved back to New York City. Previously, I taught English classes including developmental English classes, grammar, reading skills, English 101, and ESL at Bellevue College in Bellevue, Washington. I also advised students in choosing their first quarter classes and tutored grammar, reading, writing, and pre-college math skills. Recently I moved back to New York City. Previously, I taught English classes including developmental English classes, grammar, reading skills, English 101, and ESL at Bellevue College in Bellevue, Washington. I also advised students in choosing their first quarter classes and tutored grammar, reading, writing, and pre-college math skills. Also, I tutored at two prominent tutoring agencies and learned useful teaching techniques which I currently practice. Moreover, I have also participated and led training sessions for adults for the Girl Scouts and the Red Cross.
Typically, I teach process writing beginning with the student's skills and breaking down the writing process to build on those skills. In this way, as the assignments become more difficult, the more skilled and confident the writer becomes. For this reason, I encourage the student to write more about less. This helps increase writing vocabulary and also helps the writer find his/her voice. Since in any writing, we learn more about the writer than the subject, it is important for the writer to control his writing. I teach the student to do just that. Better grades are the inherent byproduct.

a pro like no other

Arline has been tutoring my 16 year old daughter for almost a year now and her patience and dedication to the job is humbling. Arline never loses her cool, never just "gives up" like I've seen other tutors do. She also laughs with my daughter and engages her in a way that is beautiful to listen to (from my place in an adjacent room). Nothing phases Arline, and she is a good natured and caring person who has an open mind. Arline is always easy to reach, and always gets back to me within a few hours of my reaching out to her. After the first session my daughter had with Arline, I asked my daughter what she thought of Arline (I listened to the whole session in an adjacent room). My daughter said, "I don't like her," and when I asked her why, my daughter said "because she makes me think." Needless to say, Arline has been coming almost every Saturday for nearly a year now and my daughter loves her. I joke to my friends that Arline is part tutor/part therapist because she connects with my daughter in a way that enables my daughter to relax with Arline and tell Arline what she is trying to say in a writing assignment but just sometimes isn't able to put down on paper. And of course, my daughter's writing has improved markedly since Arline joined our ranks ;) I also connect with Arline - we could sit and talk for hours (but she wouldn't charge me for that). I hesitate to write this great review only because I am worried she will become too busy to help my daughter! Because of Arline, I have recommended her and Wyzant to everyone I know. Sometimes you just get lucky and Arline is proof of that ;)

Just the right amount of help

I liked how she didn't simply make me write a paper and then edit it by herself and the give it back to me or write the paper for me but instead we really wrote the paper together whereof I got stuck on something we would work it out together and we would both catch mistakes. It wasn't one sided it was just the right amount of help
