About FRED

I am a retired educator from the NYC Department of Education. I have worked with special education students from the grade of Kindergarten through 12th grade. I was primarily in the Hearing Education Services program. I worked with students of all ages in a classroom setting. I was primarily an ASL Interpreter in the classroom.
I worked one on one in all subjects. I am fluent in ASL, history, reading and writing. I can help students prepare for exams, regents and reports.

I am deaf myself, but oral. I use total communication when conversing with students and parents. I am a lipreader and signer in ASL. I am available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays if my schedule permits. I live in the Bronx and am willing to commute to help you succeed and pass your classes. I am very friendly and I care deeply about your education. I would like to see everyone be successful in their future. Lesson's can be set up through Skype or FaceTime if it is difficult to meet.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Cooking

I am a self-taught successful home cook. I am versed in the basics of cooking. I specialize in baking and pastries. I am knowledgeable in measurements, utensils, equipment, different cooking methods such as, sautéing, frying, baking, broiling, braising, poaching, slow cooking and grilling. I am knowledgeable about different foods from different cultures, spices and nutrition values. I was asked in the past to demonstrate how to make my signature cookies at some schools that provide cooking classes. My methods are thorough and hands on.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked for the Department of Education for close to 20 years. I have spent most of my 20 years working with special needs students in an elementary setting. On a daily basis, I worked with my students one to one covering a wide range of subjects that include, math, reading, writing, spelling, science, social studies, geography and penmanship. My tutoring methods are to go slow, with several examples to make sure the student understands the material presented in front of them.

Sign Language

As a deaf person, I am fluent in ASL. I have worked with HOH and Deaf students for close to 20 years. I was a classroom interpreter and worked with students on a one to one basis. I taught ASL privately to individuals who wanted to learn ASL. My tutoring methods are to go slow, with several examples to make sure the student understands the material presented in front of them.

Social Studies

I have worked for the Department of Education for almost 20 years. Social Studies is my favorite subject. I have worked with many students from K - 12. My strengths are K - 6. Topics I am well versed in are, Explorers, Constitution, Westward Expansion, Inventors, growth of the United States. My tutoring methods are to go slow, with several examples to make sure the student understands the material presented in front of them.

Tax Preparation

I have had an income tax business for over 20 years. I prepare income tax forms for Deaf and HOH clients who need someone that is fluent is ASL. I am versed in explaining the current laws and requirements each year that the Federal government mandates.
