About Steve

Bio

I have learned to excel in school by graduating with a 3.5 (undergrad), and a 3.66 (grad). I minored in Creative Writing as an undergraduate.

I tutor in English, with a specialization in Reading. I was an ELA tutor for 7th graders at Thurgood Marshall Academy for Learning and Social Change from 2006-2007. From 2014 to 2015 (within a 5 month timeframe), I helped a student go from non- reader to Level C reader (3-level increase). To pass 1st grade, the student is one level away. I'm now...

I'm now looking to help students with test prep, specifically with ACT English and SAT reading.

In addition, I specialize in teaching the fundamentals of chess which helps students to use reason and logic better on the board. This can in turn make students better academically. I am currently a Chess Specialist at two different programs (Morningside Center for Teaching Social Responsibility, and The Leadership Program) for two different schools. I teach elementary and middle school students. I have seen my students advance in a month's time frame in fundamental play. I keep chess engaging and fun while I encourage learning. I am currently rated under the United States Chess Federation at 1476, although I haven't been actively playing in USCF tournaments since May 2014. I provide assessments when necessary and lots of encouragement as chess can become frustrating. I have a principle that I abide by and urge my students to follow: Play to learn. Learn to play. This motto is used in all of my subjects.

Lastly, I specialize in elementary Math (K-5). I also can teach pre-algebra. I used to help a family member in college with pre-algebra while I was in middle school!

I am available for training in 4 boroughs (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens) and would prefer making home visits. However, I am able to travel to another location that is more convenient for the student.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success!

ESL/ESOL

When I was in middle school, I helped my mother with her college English homework. She was able to get B and B+ grades with my help. I would be able to do the same for you! I have graduated with a Masters, and have learned that once the fundamentals are followed consistently, that any complex problem can become simple.

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I believe I'm qualified to teach elementary math based on my knowledge of higher level mathematics such as Pre-Calculus. I have assisted students in elementary math privately with positive outcomes. I am able to give hints/tricks to make math easier for students to tackle math problems. One quick example is any number that has a factor of 9 equals 9. For example 54 equals 9 (5+4).
Reading,

Reading

I have assisted one student from going from a non-reader to a Level C reader in 4 months. This student wasn't motivated to get better, but I was able to accomplish this feat with him barely getting help throughout the school year.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I was an ELA tutor for 7th graders at Thurgood Marshall Academy for Learning and Social Change around 9 years ago. With the teacher's permission, I was able to conduct in-class spelling tests to help improve the student's vocabulary as well as spelling ability. I also included a grammar section on that test to ensure the students understood what the word meant. I also graded those tests and was able to see improvement.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

I have helped college students with their essays and that provided them an opportunity to get Bs and better. I have used that knowledge to help students with test taking: making sure that a student writes grammatically correct. Giving a student simple rules to follow to guide their test taking is essential: like read a sentence in context and find the key word that the sentence revolves around. This allows for better reading comprehension and success in choosing the correct answer for the student.

Knowledgeable and professional tutor

Today was the first time we met Steve and my son Caleb really enjoyed him. Steve was prompt and ready to start. Caleb expressed that he was calm, knowledgeable and very observant. I look forward to seeing Caleb develop a positive relationship with math with the help of Steve.

Excellent first lesson

Steve is a great chess tutor. I appreciate being able to learn by playing, and he gave me great tips, and allowed me to learn from my mistakes. Looking forward to improving my game, and I am certain that Steve will help me do that.

Simply Great

I've had other tutors through the site but Steve really warrants an awesome review. He's been with us a few weeks now and we really like him. He assisted our daughter in knocking our a major report she had to do and my wife and I were like why didn't we get a tutor for these reports before!? Anyway... Steve is great!

Awesome tutor

Steve has been tutoring my son with some special needs for nearly six months. He is prompt, patient, and knowledgeable about the game of chess. I believe chess has helped my 11 year old son in so many ways and I thank Steve for his patience and passion for the game in helping my son reach another developmental and emotional milestone. Steve, thank you very much. Collins and Allison
