About Renee

My name is Renee P., and I am an Academic Coach for early learners with a M.S. ED.

I am also a NYS Certified Teacher in Birth to 6th grade with Student with Disabilities.

I firmly believe that children have the right to fall in love with learning. My goal is to fit education to your child and not the other way around. My specialty is improving executive functioning skills in young children in Pre-K to 6th grade.

Your child’s struggle should be only part of their story.

I believe this heart, mind, and soul because I was your child. If you had met me when I was a child, you might have seen a student that was bright, loved acquiring new information, and was super talkative. However, I was struggling despite good behavior and slightly above average grades.

I hated to take tests, and they gave me hives. I could read a book in a day, but would spend hours writing just one paragraph. I could debate you to death on political facts, but if you asked me to spell “receive,” I wanted to scream. I had to work twice as hard as the average student to get my work done.

I learned differently than my peers. My parents saw me struggle and tried to give me all the help they knew how to give from Hooked on Phonics to study groups to intensive workshops. What they couldn’t have known is that I had a learning processing issue called dyslexia. Despite that they focused on getting me to understand how to learn which made all the difference.

Labels are for containers not children.

For as long as I can remember, I enjoyed sharing information and making it stick for anyone who would listen. I love puzzles and mysteries and how to figure them out. Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys were some of the first book series that I read religiously as a child. Kids are a mystery and I couldn’t wait to learn how to unlock how they think. As a born and raised New Yorker, I was a part of a school system that valued the learner. As I watch the Common Core push students and parents with achievement, I see the devaluation on process over product.

I learned that how you teach children is just as important as what you teach them.

My experiences are far and wide as a teacher. For over seven years, I have soaked up teaching in any capacity that has allowed me to connect with a wide range of children in order to understand how they think and learn.

I started my journey as an undergrad at Bard College when I interned at El Museo Del Barrio in their education department. After graduating from Bard, I worked as a teaching artist for City Lights Youth Theater, an organization that works with youth in public schools in Brooklyn and the Bronx, and with the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. I also practiced teaching as a substitute in the New York Public School system for 5 years, and I was a co-preschool teacher in an enrichment school called Discovery Programs.

I completed my MS in Early Childhood/General/Special Education from Mercy College. I am currently teaching at a private school in the City, and I also teach Sunday School at Transfiguration Lutheran Church in Harlem. I am apart of Pi Lambda Theta, and I graduated with top honors from Mercy College.

My first foray into business was an arts-education babysitting service, and I loved working with children and providing enriching arts and creative activities for them to engage in. After two and half years of this work, however, something was missing for me. I wasn’t connecting with children in a direct way. I had a thriving business and I was mentoring young people on how to be creative with kids, but it wasn’t enough. I saw that parents were struggling with educational decisions for their children.

“Am I doing enough? Is the school down the street a good fit? My child has homework to do, but I don’t have the time to learn the new content that is being presented at their school. How do I to tailor the educational needs of my child without going insane?

It lead to the decision to close my business in order to help parents of struggling early learners receive the extra support that they wished they had more often. It pains me to see children quit on learning before they even start.

I want your child to thrive as a lifelong learner.

And it starts by beginning where they are.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with students in the past year as a Lower School Floater teacher at City and Country with children that struggle with ADD in the classroom.

I currently work with a student who has an IEP that states she has ADHD. I have been working with her for the past six months. I have created tailored modifications to her homework organization as well as writing strategies.

I also have worked with other students at my church with ADD/ADHD students as the head of Sunday School as they struggle to grasp the material. I often tailor their lessons differently especially in regards to working memory.

Autism

In the past, I have worked for a company called Theracare. I worked with children with Autism. They provided ABA training as well as supported play training.

As a certified Special Education teacher, I have also done many observations as well as hands on work with children with Autism.

Dyslexia

I have taught this population for the past three years. My student teaching experience was in a CTT classroom. I was taught there Orton-Gilliham I then worked at City and Country as a lower school floater helping children who had various learning differences including being dyslexic. Then as a Vs (K) Associate, we helped many struggling learners learn the foundations of reading using techniques such as Handwriting Without Teaars.

ISEE

As an education therapist in training, I am well equipment to provide study skills for any test. I have worked with students in the past whom have taken tests including ISEE as well as Common Core exams and have pasted with flying colors.

Special Needs

I have my Master's in Special Education. I specialize in working with young learners (Preschool to 5th). I believe that instilling a passion for learning starts with working with the whole child. I have worked with kids with Autism, PDS and ADHD for the past three years. I have successfully partnered with families to instill the best confidence in their children.

Study Skills

As an educational therapist, I am an expert in study skills. I teach executive function skills that range from time management to building confidence as well as planning and organization for the past year and half.
