Empire State College (Music)
Hello prospective students, my name is Demian and I have been playing guitar for 30 years and teaching, performing, and recording since 1990. My experience in teaching guitar and music theory ranges from private to group-lessons in home or in public schools from Arizona to New York. I originally learned guitar by ear, playing records of my favorite classic rock bands from A to Z like it was a full-time job. However, my interest in music spans all styles and genres. Years later I became a devoted Guitar Player reader and student of this publication and would eventually meet some of my teacher/idols from this publication at the New School in New York City. My acceptance into the New School validated my self taught abilities as a guitar player and musician as I had to pass a theory and guitar proficiency test.
I teach all ages and customize lessons to my students needs and abilities. I have also worked with "typically-developing" students as well as special-needs children. My keen sensibility to observe and find methods or approaches that work for my students has advanced many of my students from not knowing a chord or scale to being able to learn songs by ear and make songs of their own. Apart from learning their favorite songs, my students also learn how to learn for themselves how to find their way around the guitar, whether it be finding chords, changing keys, improvising etc. Hello prospective students, my name is Demian and I have been playing guitar for 30 years and teaching, performing, and recording since 1990. My initial learning of composition started more by accident or necessity rather than choice. In !987 I bought a computer software program that promised to notate whatever I played on the guitar and this was my main motivation for this program. However it didn't deliver it's promise. However, my need to notate what I was playing was great and I learned by optional method this program offered which was to put it in manually. I learned through a lot of trial and error but this was a blessing in disguise as I am pretty proficient in composing and writing what I play and hear now.
Part of my teaching guitar has a great deal to do with ear training. Many of my students want more than to be given chords or melody to a song. I specialize in creating lessons that give them the basic tools to practice ear training in a fun and engaging way based on their musical interests all-the-while showing the connectivity between genres. I have been learning music, bass, guitar, ukulele, piano, and voice for decades and can pretty much learn most melodies by ear.
I have been teaching guitar and music since 1990 privately and in public schools in Arizona and New York City, Bronx, and Brooklyn. I have studied music at BMCC, Hunter College, and received my BA in Music at Empire State College. I custom-tailor my lessons to my students interests, and deficiencies to get to where they want to be.
I have been writing songs before I would have even called myself a guitar player. My styles vary diverse and span many genres, some even unclassified. I have worked in many original bands, have experience as a session musician, and have worked on composing and arranging for many musicians and clients, which demonstrates my knowledge of music theory.
Apart from learning composition on my own study and analysis of music from classical to big band jazz music, I have also learned to write and compose my own music. I have also arranged music for various instruments or taking a solo guitar piece and dissecting it to arrange for trio or quartets. I have studied many styles of Music and common progressions in used in a diverse array of music styles and genres.
