I am very well equipped to be a math tutor, having taught math to junior and senior high school students in private schools in the Riverdale-Manhattan area for over 30 years. In this capacity, I have trained students to master Algebra, Geometry, and Trig, as well as basic mathematics, with excellent results. In my position, I also prepared students for the New York State Regents exams, as well as the SAT and ACT exams and high school entrance exams. My administrators frequently commended me on the superior achievements my students attained on their math exams, and noted that, as a result of my courses, they were well prepared to move on to higher level work.
In my capacity as a math teacher, I was often approached by parents, who asked me to tutor their children. As a result, over the past 30 years I have worked individually with hundreds of youngsters, helping them master math concepts and procedures in order to succeed in their classes and perform well on standardized tests. My approach as a tutor is to first establish my tutee's needs and abilities, and to then fashion an individualized program for him/her. I take the student through math examples in a step-by-step manner, making sure the student grasps each point. We then do several additional, similar examples, at first working together and then with the student proceeding alone, to ensure mastery of the topic. I assign follow-up work to see if the student has indeed understood what has been taught. My hallmark is complete patience, and I will continue to go over the material until the student gains complete comprehension. I hope that this approach will help your child gain mastery and confidence in math, and I look forward to enabling your child to reach his/her full math potential.
Larry is truly a great tutor!!! He tutored my cousin in Algebra, after he had failed the Regents exam. My cousin loved Larry! He was so patient and explained the material thoroughly; my cousin finally got a better grasp of the material. He just retook the Regents...and passed!!! None of this would have been possible without Larry's excellent tutoring!! Thanks again, Larry!!!Chantell, 9 lessons with Larry
Knowledgeable & patient gentleman
Larry asked my son about himself in relation to his thoughts on math and his Algebra 2 class at school. He then went over the basics my son had yet to grasp and helped him work towards studying for an upcoming exam. He showed him concepts to review after the session as well. Overall a positive and helpful experience for my son.Jeanette, 13 lessons with Larry
A Calming, Experienced, and Positive Influence on My Scatter-Brained Teen-Ager
Due to multiple moves, dyslexia, and ADD, my sixteen-year-old son had fallen way behind on math. Though he somehow made it through freshman year in high school, he still couldn't perform basic calculations in pre-algebra, geometry, and even long division. I wouldn't have wished his case on ANY tutor, but Larry took him on for several weeks over the summer, and started from scratch to prepare my son for tenth grade. Larry has been a teacher for many, many years, and his experience shows. He doesn't need anything but a paper and pen, and he moves methodically through each topic. He knows where to begin, which topics are covered in NYC schools, how to keep my son interested, how to explain hard concepts, and how to maintain a warm, personal relationship without blurring the lines between student and teacher. After each lesson, Larry assigns a short homework that he writes up on the spot based on the work they did that day. He also conducts periodic reviews of topics they covered previously. My son made a LOT of progress in a short amount of time, thanks to Larry's steady, disciplined pace. I also like that Larry is "old school," in that he shows up on time and gets to work without any fuss. My son (who is easily distracted) responds well to Larry's authority and works harder for him than he would for me or others. I would have been yelling my head off, but Larry never even raises his voice. After several weeks of tutoring, my son is much more confident in performing the kind of math he will need for high school and standardized tests. I should also mention that Larry is professional, punctual, communicative, and (gasp!) affordable. Given his skill, experience, and the progress he made with my son, I feel Larry could charge much more than he does. Frankly, I would pay double his current rate. ...hope he doesn't read that part...USHA, 29 lessons with Larry

Patient, calm and just what was needed
Larry was calm and patient and really seemed to find the best place to start with Tate, who frankly has no memory of what he has learned, no idea where he stood or what he needed to (or should) know at this point in his life. We have been free and home schooling for 3 years, so there really is no measuring stick. Tate felt very comfortable with Larry and feels like this is a great start. We are looking forward to moving forward and hoping to increase Tate's confidence as we go!Melissa, 15 lessons with Larry
