In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been playing chess since I was 16 years old. I was a part of an unofficial chess club my high school English teacher held during lunch time in his classroom, which I participated in from 2002 to 2004. I learned how to play chess from my English teacher and from several of my fellow students.
I have been cooking since I was 13; I learned from my family who are very accomplished home cooks. I also worked for a restaurant, Havana Cafe, for three months during the Summer 2006 where I cooked, waitressed, acted as barista and other needed tasks. I even helped Havana Cafe cater a private party during my employment. I also catered a party for an RA friend of mine hosting an event for the students while at Winthrop University in 2007.
During my studies at Winthrop University (2004-2009) I took four semesters of Aural Skills in order to graduate with my Bachelors of Arts in Music. In these classes, I not only learned how to sing and use solfedge, but I also learned how to identify intervals, chords, scales, rhythms, time signatures and note values through various melodic, rhythmic and harmonic dictation exercises in all four of the major clefs in Western musical notation. In order to graduate with my BA in music and also go on to the next aural skills class, I had to pass each aural skills class with a C or higher.
I have studied violin classically since 1997, using the Suzuki Method. In 1999, I began studying the piano private. Eventually, I pursued my Bachelor of Arts in Music from Winthrop University from 2004 to 2009 where I studied music theory, aural skills, music history, violin, chamber orchestra, music technology and more piano. Previously I have instructed students privately in violin, piano and voice however I teach all of my students the basics of music theory, aural skills and music history. Therefore, I can comfortably teach a student on general basic music concepts such as music theory, instrumentation, music history and aural skills if needed.
While studying violin under Gregg Anderson from 1997-2004, he would often have me learn about the historical significance of the particular composer I was performing as well as the type of piece I was learning. When I began my Bachelor of Arts studies in Music at Winthrop University, I took about three-four semesters in music history, alongside two music history electives: one in Baroque Music History and the other in Music History of the Classic Period. Currently I am applying to MM programs in Music History to prepare for a career as an academic researching French Baroque instrumental music.
I learned how to do cross stitch, embroidery, crochet and knitting from my paternal grandmother when I was six. In my teens, I started to learn how to sew from my mother and maternal grandmother, who learned from my maternal great-grandmother who had worked as a professional seamstress in a textile factory and with her own private side business. I am currently working to start up my own needlework/sewing business and create my own artistic style of needlework and fashion design.
I have a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science from Winthrop University, and a Masters of Science in Political Science in International Relations from Suffolk University. I have worked with NGOs for the past six years.
I learned how to sew from my mother, maternal grandmother and paternal grandmother. Sewing is a tradition in my family, particularly on the maternal side of my family that goes back centuries. My maternal-great grandmother, who taught my mother and grandmother how to sew, worked professionally as a seamstress at a textile factory in New Jersey and also had her own sewing business. Like my great grandmother, I can make dresses, shirts and skirts without a pattern.
While pursuing my Bachelors of Arts from Winthrop University (2004-2009) I had to take four semesters of aural skills. When I took each level of aural skills, I had to learn how to sing major, minor, pentatonic, chromatic, and whole tone scales and the church modes using fixed and unfixed solfedge. We also learned how to sing simple melodies, duets, trios and extensive songs using solfedge either previously rehearsed or using sight reading. In order to graduate and move on to the next level I had to receive a C or higher and pass each of my exams which included a sight singing performance with one rehearsed and one sight singing piece in front of a three person panel. Therefore, I can give my potential students a university level experience and quality tutoring experience in sight singing whether they wish to learn fixed-tonic solfedge or moveable-tonic solfedge.
In Fall 2003 I took intro to sociology at Edison State College. I took the class to prepare for my BA in political science work at Winthrop University. While there, I took several classes on comparative politics, which normally used theories and resources from sociological anthropologists. Through my studies of political science both at the undergraduate and graduate level, I have developed a firm understanding as to how various social groups and also variables such as gender, age, religious affiliation and sexual orientation can affect social structure and activity.
I have studied violin privately since 1997, originally with Gregg Anderson of the Napes Philharmonic Center of the Arts. In 2004 I was accepted to the BA program in Music (and Political Science) thanks to a music scholarship as a result of my audition with the violin which enabled me to get an instate tuition fee waiver and an additional $500 per scholarship. While at Winthrop I studied violin under Janet Brendle of the Charlotte Symphony orchestra, and I performed with the Rock Hill Chamber Orchestra and a string quartet. Since I started tutoring in 2012, I have taught four violin students between the ages of 4-12 with intentions of getting more and expanding my studio.
I received basic voice coaching lessons from my piano teacher in 1999. Since then I have continued to train through self-study and with the assistance of several friends I made while I was pursuing my BA in Music at Winthrop University For the past year, I had a voice student, soprano level, that I taught. For voice students I do extensive solfedge and sight singing training to help develop range and strong tonal skills, and also have them work on repertoire learning and breathing techniques to promote proper technique and superior performance.
