I have 20 years of experience teaching Regents Earth Science, and I really love the subject and I believe my passion is evident in my teaching and tutoring. Aside from classroom teaching, I hold several other education-related positions. I am the Lead Content Trainer in Regents Earth Science for New York City. I have served as a teacher-consultant to the New York State Education Department and in that capacity have written questions for the Earth Science Regents exam and have sat on various committees charged with the development of the written exam and the performance exam. I have served as a New York State Mentor in Earth Science and Biology and have mentored many New York City teachers in my school and in the position of High School Science staff developer for my district. In addition, for several years, I taught a graduate meteorology course for the federal government under the auspices of the National Atmospheric and Oceanographic Administration (NOAA). I am New York State certified in Regents Earth Science, Chemistry, Biology, and General Science, grades 7 to 12.
The methods I employ in my tutoring are the same as those which I employ in classroom teaching. I try to make the lesson interesting and engage the student in the lesson and in his/her own achievement. I foster critical thinking by deemphasizing memorization and guiding the student to thinking the problem through, and understanding the steps and concepts required to arrive at a solution. Some things, of course, must be memorized, but to my mind, that really should never be all that learning is about. Investigation, exploration, and analysis achieve far better results, and also helpful is relating concepts in science to experiences and events the student is familiar with.
I'm invested in my student's success and make myself available for questions or problems outside of our tutoring time. The student's success is my success and both are important to me. I am glad that we found Faye to tutor my daughter in Earth Science. She is definitely the best in the subject area. I can see my daughter's grades improved after tutoring and she is more confident to take the Earth Science Regent. What impressed me most is that she is available to answer some homework questions, and she would inform me the correct answer when she had second thought about a practice exam question. It ended up the correct answer given by the classroom teacher was actually not correct, and she explained the thought process to my daughter in detail. I believe with Faye's help, my daughter can get A+ in earth science!
Faye is an excellent tutor. She is knowledgeable, reliable and goes above and beyond to assist her student. My son's grades are improving since working with her.
Well versed in Earth Science and Regents Test prep. Is very patient. Knows how to refocus student. Is very prepared.
We were very pleased with Faye. She is very knowledgeable and easy to deal with. I referred her to a number of my friends because I could see how valuable she would be. I would highly recommend her.
We feel very fortunate to have found Faye through WyzAnt and she has been a great help in preparing our daughter for the Earth Science Regents exam. Being a science teacher herself who is very familiar with not only the subject matter, but the actual test structure, it gave us the confidence to book her for several weeks leading up to the test.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
