I am a Special Education teacher working for the New York City Department of Education for 11 years. I teach a "bridge class" for grades 1-3. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a special education teacher currently working with children who are ADD/ADHD in the classroom, among other disabilities, and I use different approaches in learning. For example, exercise is definitely included in activities due to the fact they have so much energy, breaks are given in between activities, and activities have to be kinetic and tangible in order for the child to stay focused.

Autism

I am a special education teacher for grades 1-3 , although the Dept of Education does not give a "test " for teaching autistic children I have from experience (11 yrs) worked with children who are autistic. I currently am tutoring a high functioning autistic child who is in the first grade. Materials used are from the core curriculum however modified to meet your child's "functioning" level. I use the Edmark Reading Program that uses basic sight words in conjunction with pictures and sentences. Everything I use use tangible ..autistic children work well when using things they can touch, feel. I also use songs to teach comprehension, sequencing.

Phonics

As a Special Education teacher I have been trained to work with a program called "Fundations". It is a tool used in phonemic awareness and incorporates pictures with letters, a handwriting book and tiled letters to make words. I also have other resources such as the Edmark Reading Program which teaches as a whole language approach. Many children learn through varies techniques, therefore I must first assess and see where the child's phonemic skills are before applying strategies. The majority of my children have come into my class as low leveled readers and have at the end of the year progressed two more levels.

Special Needs

I have been a certified New York State Special Education Teacher for 11 years. I work with children with varies disabilities such as down syndrome (Intellectual disability), learning disabled, emotional disturbance and autistic. I teach the core curriculum just as a general education teacher would however it is modified to meet the needs of a Special Education child as per their I.E.P (Individualized Education Program). I use varied strategies such as prompting, scaffolding, visuals, manipulatives, flashcards etc. I am a very disciplined teacher who believes every child can learn even if it is just a milestone.

I love my job and my kids. I usually keep my lower functioning children for two years because the need for repetition and practice is needed and by the end of the year many children "forget" subjects taught.
